Does anyone know how many amps a starter solenoid required to trigger it. I'm replacing all the switches on my dash, I want to make sure I get one which will not burn out.

Cheers

Hi,

If the Switch you buy is for 12volts you wont have a problem...just dont buy a piddly little one like that used for car alarm kill switches. Something along lines of a lighting switch is a safe bet.

Most generally dont tell you amount of current that they can handle anyways.

Are you sure about the current of the solenoids. Its a hefty wire, something like 2.5mmsqr, well on the pre engaged it is, and fed with a relay itself.

Id recon at least 10 amps?? for the pre engaged.

Inertia solenoid, well you may be right, thinking about it. Theres no mechanical load on it.

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be...
So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

The pre engaged ones turn the starter slowly and have a solinoid to push the cog over,Then the main power goes in.So I expect they take more

Hi,
The pre-engaged don't turn slowly, but need a lot of current to push the pinion into mesh. Once engaged the current drops right off.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

3amps to 5amps is normal for a solenoid with a charged battery
