Looks brilliant mate, your much braver than i am making your own plenum, injection system etc...
As im planning on doing something similar i got hold a plenum off a lotus esprit turbo but it might be abit on the large side...

What turbo setup are you thinking of? and what kind of power are you expecting? Ive heard some people think turboing these heads is not worth the £

Well, It's probably going to be smaller than mine, the plenum volume has ended up massive!! Its not helped by the large distance between the intakes for no's 2&3.

I have heard loads of different "optimum" sizes for plenum volume, 0.8, 1.2-1.5, 2 times the the vol of one cylinder ect...

I think that as long as the volume is not too small it won't make a massive difference, but we'll see!!

The plenum was a bit ambitous especially as i'd never tigged before, doing the injector ports was a PITA, for the next one i do (and there will be a mk2 plenum!) I will look out for some of those intake trumpets with injector holes in, will save a lot of aggro.

When i bought the head noone was doing the K1100 bike head conversion parts, had they been available i would have been going down that route, although there is still some tricky stuff with that conversion that you can,t do easily in you garage, for example reliveing the pistons for the valves. the 7 port remains a bit more bolt on. As to whether turboing these heads is worth it....
How else do you FI a turbo A series? ok the Megasquirt code may not be far off, but its not here quite yet, and you still have to make a plenum...

Spec wise it will be fairly ordinary, except it will be a 1380 or 1430 depending if the crank in the base engine needs a regrind. the idea is not to run loads of boost, 10psi most of the time and turn it up to about 15 at times. power wise we'll see, the head is too much of an unknown to take a guess at, but i hope for similar to some of the really good 5 ports, but with better drivability due to a highish comp ratio and Fuel Injection.

Had another play in the garage today.

first off i "fettled" the transfer case to make a few more mm for the intercooler. The observent of you may notice the upside down starter motor...

Then i added some mounting brakets to the intercooler.

Then I did the fixing holes, and screwed it into place.

Also my cordless drill decided to pack it in (cheap batteries) so I made a new creation.....

the semi cordless drill...*laughing*

After that a started on the endtanks for the intercooler, but I don't have any pics of those yet, so heres some pics my mate took of my min's while i was butchering the wheel nut off his STI that he rounded off.

Ok been a while since this has been updated,

Progress has been a bit slow due to work, but there has been some, mostly on the small PITA bits that don't notice.

I have however made a schedule 10 stainless exhaust manifold fot the gt25vnt and external wastegate.

also the down pipe with lamda EGT probe fittings is underway.

Ive been queitly following this thread since the start and i think its going to be an absolute top bit of kit.

Out of curiosity, why have you placed the EGT after the turbo?

Surely (and im probably wrong here) its of no use as the tubo will massively effect (dampen) the temp reading so it wont be (as) directly linked to the temp at the valve per say...or will it make such minimal difference that im splitting hairs?

..still learning...

Anyway, keep the top work up

tape holder LOL!

the sensor is after the turbo as its a cheap one and i don't trust it not to melt and go through the turbine,

Also at the moment i'm more interested in the temp of the turbo, if the vane's stick/distort i want to find out what temp it occurs at.

I will put a probe before the turbo at some point along with a pressure (TIP) take off*wink*

That's a work of art.

What bends are you using?

What have you painted the plenum with?

the bends are just some 316L ones from dynoflow and a couple from Milner off road, the milner ones are cheaper but a tiny bit thinner i think, still sould be ok for a downpipe.

the plenum is painted with crinkle paint from frost automotive, the trick is to heat up what your painting, then spray it on and getley warm it with a heat gun, the solvent in the paint then evaporates off nice and quick and gives a deep crinkle finish. Also the more mass the object has the better the crinkle as it stays hot longer....

The best results I've had yet was on a heavy duty axle stand I warmed up and tryd it on LOL.

Ok,

have been a bit busy lately with work, plus my girfriends mum killing the headgasket on her Cheekychento due to the rad springing a leak....

Anyway managed to get a little bit done,

First off I've converted an actuator to dual port so it will operate the vnt vanes by vacum or boost. used a valve guide seal to seal the actuator rod.

As can be seen in this pic, the top rad hose is right where i need to run the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler....

Here is the space onder the bonnet...

I have got around this by chopping and rewelding the thermostat housing so the top hose points down a bit... the pipe just fits now...

with a bit of a kink welded into the pipe above the thermostat housing it all seems to fit!

Also i was getting a bit concerned as i wasn't sure how much room there was between the turbo and bonnet.... theres a good inch to spare though, so i'll add a heat sheild to the turbo, and some heat proof cloth to the under side of the bonnet.

Fortunately I have the next 2 weeks off so should be able to make some real progress rather than the occasional farting around i've been doing lately.

I'm well impressed that you're managing to get it all under the standard bonnet line.

And I like your VNT control too.

Loving your work, dude.

I drill holes in everything..!

Cheers!

I REALLY don't want to have to have any bumps or vents, In fact at first glance the only real giveaways (hopefully) will be the wheels, 2" exhaust and dials on the dash.

everything else will be period Mk1 rally stylie.

In fact i will when its finished If i get on with the 13" rims I'd like to get hold of some 13" Rosepetals (I think they did them for Imps) They'll clear the brakes and look right, otherwise its 10" force rims.

Eventually i want to ditch the actuator and get a servo or solenoid on there controlled by the Megasquirt ECU, I think the code that already exists may do it but i'll cross that bridge when.....

Also one thig you can't see is the big external wastegate that sits about where the turbo would normally be, it was the smallest I could find.... 35mm bore! Unfortunatley I dont have any pics of that, Next week i'll take the lot off and grab some pics of the whole assy.

Well had 3 days off work so far this week, and have managed to get a few productive hours in on the car, most of them spent on tweaking the exhaust & down pipe which seams to have changed shape since I last looked at it *oh well* And generally geting it to fit right and go on and off easy(ish).

Today I finally managed to get onto some other stuff, first off i made some Copper Gaskets for the manifold to turbo, turbo to downpipe and wastegate, below is the turbo to downpipe one just before anealing.

Also while I think of it heres a pic of the manifold, top down pipe (its split into 2 si it will actually fit) and wastegate assy, and also a pick of the water pipes for the turbo.

I had then got to the point where i was running out of stuff to do as I'm waiting for payday (friday) to order some more stuff, this obvously lead to me drinking beer....

With the aid of beer I decided it would be a good idea to to tackle a job I've been putting of for ages....

Counterboring the plugs deeeper into the head.

Here are some pics of where the plugs come to in the Std casting.

As you can see they are RIGHT up the hole... they need to be approx 5mm further into the chamber.

after having a lengthy prod round the waterways near the plugs i decided that counterboring the plugs 5mm "should be ok"

I dug out a (oversize) counterbore and modded it (ground it down so the spigot would go up the plug thread and ground the cutter diameter down to just a bit bigger than the plug.

I then counterbored one of the plug holes 5mm whilst hoping to fuck the waterways were where I thought the were...

Fortunately I didn't find fresh air! *happy* heres some comparison pics.

I did the other 3 and then gave the plug hole a bit of a cleanup with a stone where it was a bit of a funny shape in the chamber

Now i've done that i just need to strip the head an give it a wash, get a gasket and bolt the bugger down. I have all the gaskets now so once i've sorted the turbo oil feed and return I can bolt to turbo on for real too.*happy*
