If I was to manufacture my own manifold to fit a T" turbo what grade stainless is recommended 303, 304 or 316?

Also what OD/wall thickness or ID/wall thinkness?

I know I can just make an adaptor plate to make the T2 fit but I'm still considering making my own manifold!
Cheers,

Graham.

321 is the correct grade for turbo manifolds.

304 will suffice, but not as robust as 321. 316 - forget it!!!

google burnsstainless.com as they have a lot of good tech info on their site.

Does it really matter what grade ????

I was under the impression, the higher grades tend to crack easier ??

check out Milner Offroad's website - some very reasonable mandrel bends/tubng on there.

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

It won't matter one iota on a nat-asp motor, but if you ever have your manifold even slightly glowing, then the only stainless that will do the job (again and again) for a turbo setup is 321. I understand 321 to have lower carbon than 304 and is supplemented by titanium to make for the ultimate in high-temp tubing. There is another grade similar to 321 - but don't recall what it is *laughing* but 321 is easier to find.

304 will suffice in most cases (so long as it's genuine quality 304 - or even better 304L) however, and is a lot easier to find. 316 will crack and scale after a few serious heat cycles - probably lasting twice, maybe three times longer than plain steel (which isn't very long at all)...

Jimsters manifold is made of 321 - and was even Tigged together without back-purging or using solarflux. So far so good!

I made my RV8 manifolds from plumbers black iron pipe lol

Ive seen various manifolds made from stainless. One thing you can be sure of, is that sooner or later it will crack somewhere.
Stainless expands a lot more than regular steel, so this is part of the reason.

Not heard of people using it, the main super material is called Inconel and is used on f1 exhausts. It can easily take red hot temps and apart from being £7000 for a f3 manifold its good stuff!!

Incol does the trick, use it a lot of work... hmm.... *happy*
