hi ive built an engine for turbo use, but am running n/a for now with hif44 and lcb. the engine has had a rebore, new accralite pistons and rings, new bearings, duplex chain and phase2 camshaft, but is still running a shite fairly worn head.

most of the time it runs with no smoke at all, but sometimes LOADS comes out while your driving normally. i was thinking today it does it most after a right-hander.

anyone got any sugggestions? the timing cover breather is connected to the carb, could it be this drawing oil?

thanks, Leonard

Valve guides or steam oil seals would cause it to smoke sometimes but not all the time depending on how hot the oil is.

Dunno about the turning right though??

Quiet, can you hear it rusting?

Hi,
Mine always used to do that on a left hander. I found it was diesel leaking onto my exhaust!
You however may have worn guides or a fluid leak onto the exhaust.
If you think it may be the beather disconnect it from the carb and block the hole in the carb leaving the breather open. It'll rule it out of the equation.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

that might just be coincidence with me turning right, but it always does it when ive slowed down and turned right off the main road and put my foot down again.

ps its done almost 500miles now

A diesel leak would make black smoke but petrol would just stink.

Do you find it does it if youve been sitting in traffic or at the lights and then pull off?

not really. it can just start when your driving steadily, then stop again a minute or so later.

Odd one then,
head problems usually start when the engine is getting hot and go away when you drive steady for a while and cool it down.

I had a similar problem with a fresh built engine last year, really smoked when hard cornering, turned out I had overfilled with the oil so when cornering at speed the timing cover breather connected to the carb was drawing oil up, just drained a little oil off and it cured the problem.

I know how you feel, as soon as i noticed the smoke on mine, i instantly thought, "what piston didI not align the rings correctly?" was thinking I was going to have to rip the enine out to sort it (and this was a couple of days before L2B run, nothing quite as nice as a tight deadline) Glad I checked a few small thing first before my usual bull in a china shop attitude. Hope you get it sorted,
Shane.

could this problem we've had be due to the removal of that piece in the timing cover, to allow clearance for the duplex chain? I was thinking when i removed it that it must be there for a reason.

I never removed mine, I just peined out the area that fou7led the gear with a paralel tip punch, my prob was simply due to to much oil.
