Hey all me again !

Sorry i forgot to ask something else....i also have a problem with Blowing exhaust gakets from the mainfold to the head.
It only blows in the centre manifold exhaust port...im guessing it due to the higher temperatures and pressure of two ports merging into one.
Does anyone use special gaskets?
Should i look at making a steel shim gasket like used on the rest of the turbo flanges? The normal fibre/steel one just aint doing the job

Thanks

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

The problem you have is the exhaust
centre manifold has a 98 % tendancy to

warp back with heat over many years

almost everyone i have modded has been this way

it needs removing and taking to your locall machine shop to be milled to correct this

failing that a steel rule and a bastard file and many hours may just correct this

the first advice is the the best.

As ben says - a straight edge revealls all kinds of woes.
A grinder on the outside branches is crude but effective at removing a big chunk of material.

Then a large bastard file that can 'sit' on the centre-branch and be drawn over the outer branch is pretty effective at keeping the level flat - but keep checking with a straight-edge.

This is how I've always modded mine...

I find they need doing at least once - the one in my motor neeed doing twice however. After that, it seemed to settle and not move again.

Thanks guys, I had the manifold machined earlier this year but they only did the turbo end...i never thought to bother about the other end at the time as it looked sweet. I was hopeing to not have to pull it all apart again but looks like i will have too !
Thanks

I assume you are using a proper "turbo" gasket in the first place ???

As in the one with the steel fire ring around the exhaust ports ?

From looking at the Minispares site recently when someone linked head gaskets

The efi manifold gasket looks like the original turbo gasket.

Um the gaskets i have been using are the wide verson and similar of what you would normally find on any 1275 or 1000cc.
Gasket is that grey fibre stuff with tin sandwiched in the middle of it. There are no steel rings around exhaust ports.....sounds like im using totally the wrong type of gasket ? !
Yeah the fibre stuff tends to burn and blow out on the centre port...and all am left with is the tin that dont seal.

Benross....what parts should i port? is there a link that can show me the best bits i should remove from the manifold?...are you talking about the bit at the turbo end where from memory is has like a couple of fins inside it ?...cutting them out would mean beter flow yeh.

Thanks

leave the 2 dividers in the manifold
for sure

as peter 1071 stated these are needed because of the pulsing of the 3 exhaust ports onto the turbine blades very important!!

also the outer manifold ports make these D shaped internal blending and machine these to a turbo gasket the Middle one straight matching to the turbo gasket

here is a few pics for you of the first one i did ( not so good!)

but you get the genrall picture

i have got a shade better now .........lol *laughing*

open the elbow out between 49 & 51mm hope this helps

Quite correct...you are.

Exhaust ports should have a steel ring around them for a turbo car ( and efi as it seems )

Thanks guys,

I will have to order me a few turbo gaskets from the U.K or maybe perhaps have some made here.

I will enlarge the manifold ports as Benross suggests seems a good idea.
Im glad you were quick to say leave the fins in before i ripped into it and ground them out. Thats pretty cool how big you made the elbow but i have made my own down pipe from the turbo and does away with those stupid pipe clamps.

Thanks

Something like this....

http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=38056

ALthough I see its shaped a little odd at each end.

Turbo gasket is normal shape, with steel fire rings. I'll post a pic tomorrow, as I have an old one handy, as I was using it to get flanges cut recently.

I see they are a different material from the original turbo gaskets ??

Dunno. These are the same ones I've only ever used since I got into 'turbos'...
Basically - if its the same colour as your "rich tea" biscuits, and has the firing ring - the jobs a goodun.
