when plumbing in the water system on a t2, would it be ok to run a small bike type rad between the heater take off and the inlet to the turbo system? or will this be too much of a temp drop for the turbo?

Hi,
I know that there's a similar system for Cossies, but the extra rad comes after the turbo before the water is dumped back into the bottom hose.
No reason why you couldn't do it that way on a Mini.

Gavin :)

The water flows through the turbo, then into the extra rad, then back into the header tank ( which is then in turn connected to the bottom hose )

I think the main reason for this, is the hot water tends to crack the plastic header tank, just where the water hits the sidewall of it, so cooliong it first, is supposed to reduse this happening.

A friend bought this little gimmick for his Cossie, despite him having an alloy tank.

Hi,
Stevie .. It reduces the temperature of the water, as you state, so therefore takes to load off the main radiator by cooling the extremely hot water that comes from the turbo.
This would be very handy with the minimal capacity of a Mini rad *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Plumb it back through your heater and you'd actually be able to demist your screen in less than a month!!! Make sure it has the metal ended matrix though!!!!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

im getting confused now lol. so using a take off from the hose on the thermostat housing should be the return and the take off from the head is the water in to the turbo? in that case the idea of having a small rad before the turbo would be pointless, right? will a t2 set up running 8psi with a minispares 2 core rad cope well enough? thanks guys

Hi,
Not quite, the heater take off from the stat will be hot water out the same as the heater take off from the other end of the head.
In order to get the plumbing right, will you be running a heater in the car?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Has any one tried this method but substituting the radiator for an oil cooler for use with the standard T3?

I've seen it done with heater a matrix before but personally I'd rather have the heat dumped into the car for screen demisting .... the single biggest problem I have driving Minis in the winter!!!

i plumbed my T2 into the heater pipe. so from the tap on the head to the turbo then into the heater then back into the bottom hose.

it seemed like a good idea but still in winter the heater was cold and in summer it was realy hot and you cant turn the head off as you stop flow through the turbo.

when it all goes back together again i will plumb it the same as i cant think of a better way

sugestions welcome

the only problem with plumbing the turbo in back to the bottom hose is that your dumping hot water back into your engine

best to run it to the top hose/top of the rad so it can cool off before it goes back round again

I agree with Nic about that but with the standard rad it's a bit of a fiddle .. althought not impossible with the use of a Metro thermostat housing.

There will be a way of diverting off from the turbo to the heater and still being able to bypass the heater in summer and dump the turbo return back to top hose .. will have to scheme it out ... but it is a good point.

you can bodge a bottom hose, or get something soldered onto the top tank of the rad

roger, could you use a t piece and an inline heater valve for your plan?

That is a long the lines of what I was thinking except I would use two valves to work as a diverter ... either all through the heater or all bypassing it.
