its only the very 1st part of the thread too! i think, i just cant get the compressor threads to catch the donut threads, i know the compressor is ok as i have spare donuts & checked the tool on those and they wind in fine on those no stress, typical when all my other hobs went super smooth over the last week

There will be some pressure on the arm but the pin will come with some light persuasion, just don't knacker the threads with a hammer!

With the hi-lo putting it back together will be much easier and is possible without the compressor.

Are you sure you have the right centre for the cone compressor you have? There are metric and imperial cones and no easy way to tell the difference.

If it's jacked up there will be little or no pressure from the rubber, Forgot to mention to remove the top arm rebound rubber from the subframe. it's not essential but will help a little if you do.
Cheer up just go for it. It's worth drilling a hole down the centre of the big sub frame fixing bolts while you are at it, you can then easily adjust your Hi-Lows. Also you only adjust them with the car jacked up as it's kinder to the threads on the adjusters.
One last thing, use plenty of copper grease between the ali cone and the rubber donut this will enable easier dismantling in years to come.
Sorry if I am telling you what you already know but I thought I would mention it while I was here.

Dave

yes i have both types of attachment for my cone compressor,

i only changed to hi-lo's earlier this week & on there lowest setting it ended up higher than standard due to very thick locknuts even after settling down, so i got some thinner locknuts today for the hi-los & went about changing them this eve, i presume that because of metal fatigue the 1st few threads have broken when i removed the compressor when i previously done the job, what an arse its been, it came aprt & went back together like 'lego' 1st time, no greaf!!!! hopefully its should go ok 2moro 'fingers crossed!!!'

i have some recon top arms knocking about in my garage somewhere too! they'll be the just in case measure,

i've just had to rethread one of my tie-bars too due to me ballsing a thread, i have a nack for recking threads myself or coming across them at the moment, oh well, i'm getting there, slowly but surely they say *surprised*P hehe!

danedoy/dave i'm with you on the copper grease use, the car i have was an ex-granny car, most of the parts & jobs have been great to do as she really kept it maintained so this has made most stuff easy as all the parts have been greased to the book, most parts are on it from the factory & in top condition, i stink of copper grease, cv grease, castrol LM grease, oil & other such stuff i'm using at the moment on the car haha! i love it,

i was going to carry on till midnight tonight to sort it, but thought a good kip & a fresh head on the car 2moro was best, take my time & do other jobs if all go's to plan *surprised*) i'll post picks of the new ride height when she's sorted!!!

ya a good bunch of chaps!!!

Are you aware that there are two types of thread on early and later cars / donuts?

Use the wrong tool and you get stripped threads.

Sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs and all that!

its ok! i did use the right thread on my compressor, i'll have to put some pics up when i get the donut out, the cone on the passenger side had alot of water in, this is the side thats got the donut with the stripped threads, i presume the threads were a lil rusty & could'nt take a second go with the compressor, it seems a little unusual to me that this has happened as the threads are sturdy usually, i'll upadate on the progress or non-progress tomorrow eve, i hope i get the donut out

Yes I let dad loose with the angle grinder on the trumpet when the threads let go in the cone, was out in a few mins. Was putting in HiLos anyway. My Dad is good for wrecking things!

I had this problem but managed to clean the thread up using the best tool in my garage - my Dad :) Using some tube he made a long extension for the tap.

i've been having a squizz at the car this morn, it's lookin an arse of a job to get to the top arm mounting plate & top arm bolts, i think i may take the rad out to make it easier access, if any of you have some tips to make the job easier post them up as i'll chk my pc when i come in & out of the house for a cuppa!!!

the only plus i can see to my probs at the moment is i can clean the top arm up & re-grease it well & maybe repaint it, & flush the rad through with a hose, i cant believe this has happened i'm gutted! i'll keep at it, i've not been put of minis by these probs for the last 9 yrs so i think the mini love affair is here to stay *surprised*D haha!

Hi,
I've been watching your progress on this one, glad to see you sticking at it!
Yes, take the rad out, it will make it a lot easier. Your lucky it's not the clutch side!
As said above, take the rebound rubber out. If you've got discs on the front, I would tie the caliper out of the way and remove the hub to make it easier ( knock the CV off the driveshaft.)
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Awww the top arm pivot on the clutch size.... that makes me cringe yet! That was the worst job I have done on the mini!

I had the same prob with my cone on the rad side, as I said Dad cut 80% through the trumpet then tapped it with a chisel and it colapsed enough to get it out. With the suspension on full droop there was little tension on the trumpet. Oh but maybe you have HiLos in, then you won't want to do that then. If you can't wind them down enough then take out the top arm as you say. Pointless post this then really!

I just used my 'best hitting screwdriver' and mallet to get mine out. Lol

There only made of monkey metal, couple of hits and its out!

I made a tool up now, just a tube with a flange at one end, with two different sized studding for both types of thread, does the job well.

well heres my l8 lunch update *surprised*D haha woo hoo!

i've magaged to get my rubber donut compressor to catch the threads in the donut & compress the rubber & i have removed the hi-lo, changed the fat locknuts for thin ones so all good there as i've not had to remove the top arm to get the donut out YES YES YES FCKIN CHUFFED WITH THAT!!!!

had a really good look with a torch at the threads on my compressor in the car at the moment, & it seems to have threaded straight & true into the donut & compressed it as it should have!

i think i'm going to put my hi-lo & new knuckle back in as it is & if i feel the thread of the cone is a little suspect
i.e if bits of metal are evident when i take the compressor out, i'll change the donut when the turbo motor go's in in at the end of march,
i.e. remove the engine & subframe & change the donut when the subframe is out of the car rather than now!

i think thats the easiest & probobly best way as when i have the subframe off for the sake of good access!!! also i wont be cursing loudly in the garage & scaring the neighbors by spanners, crow-bars, pry-bars & hammers flying out of the garage door into the entry haha! *surprised*D i'll get some pics of the threads etc for tonight for some opinions, cheers for all your help chaps, the new ride height & better handling is a lil closer, woo hoo!

i always am a bit wary when using a cone compressor and fishing around with the trumpet/ knuckle,

I just don't fancy the thread going with my hand in there.

say a front corner weight is 300lb x by 5 for top arm ratio (1500 lb) and some more for compressing the cone...

thats a fair bit of load on that thread.

I ALWAYS count how many threads the cone compresor has gone into the cone before i compress.

mini13 this has been my worry that all go's BANG!!! i've been very jubious about this prob i've had, i've done the ssame job a good few times but this is the only time i've had thread trouble on a donut, its not usually a prob i dont think!

I want to keep my hands really they are good for stuff are'nt they *surprised*D i've chopped thew tip of my finger off before so dont want to go that way again,

the tool i have is the sykes picivent type & its not that good a grade of metal i feel, are there better types?

the sykes one is the only one i've seen available,

i guess the older style ones like were used in garages must come up on ebay occasionaly, but i've not seen one yet.

I thought about cutting the thread off one and welding on a better quality bolt or something, but then theres a weld to fatuige...?

one comforting thing is on the minispares uprated cones i've seen the thread looks a lot better than the standard cone.
