Hi all

I've been speaking to someone about possibly buying a metro turbo engine, there's a lot I don't know about these so I'd appreciate your guidance?

The engine is out of an F reg Metro, it can be seen running and starts ok but apparently cuts out sometimes. Apparently the ECU has been removed. It has had a carb service kit fitted, new head gasket set and new timing chain, tensioner and crankshaft sprocket keyway. This was all done in October 2006. A dumpvalve and bleed valve have been fitted but are apparently non-functional atm.

I've also been told 'the ECU regulates boost but most people remove it so they can run higher than 7psi boost, although atm this car is only running 4psi so it has not had the boost whacked up'.

My questions:

1. What is the approximate value for an engine like this? I don't want to get a 'good deal' just a fair one.

2. What ancillaries do I need if I take this out of the metro and is it important to have an ECU? I gather that it running at 4psi makes it more reliable - is this correct?

3. What 're-build' costs should I factor in? e.g. what would you all do in this situation once you've bought it to make sure it doesn't just go bang further down the line? What are the approximate costs of this?

[4. What else do I need to do to my mini to put it in? I gather I need t ofit a return to the fuel tank and make a bit of room in the engine engine bay or apparently just fit a slightly different inlet manifold - I'd rather do the latter since I don't want to cut bits out of my car but does this affect performance and how easy are these alternative inlet manifolds to source?] (A link to the relevant post would great - I'm sure there's one there I just can't find it!)

[5. Is there anything else I should be thinking about?! ] (As above!!)

Many thanks everyone!

(P.S. Please feel free to air your views on any one of these points, a complete response would be great but I'm not expecting it - I just need some opinions from people who know more than me - which is everyone! Thanks all).

Hello and welcome. It looks like you've been doing some reading as you haveall the basics there. I'll answer what I can.

1) I reckon with all the bits these engines are worth around £400, but if you look on Ebay, they can go for twice this.

2) take everything, ecu, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator.

3) depends what you want

4) you will need to modify the bulkhead to make room for the turbo. There is no issue with the inlet manifold. You could use a mirage manifold (exhaust) but this fits a T2 not a T3.

Yea I agree with Wil, I was thinking around the same price, with some of the stupid prices people pay on Ebay you can't really use that as guide!

As for the cutting out, I would be very suprised if it was something mechanical (major) its more likely to be electrical, or fueling. If you know the owner, at least you know how honest (or dis-honest) they are!

This might come in handy with the mirage setup!

Metty turbo's also have 4 pots which could come in handy?

Cheers guys!

The ECU is missing - is this going to be a problem?

I really have no idea what an ECU does for this car since I thought ECUs were only for injection cars, and this is carb? This is confusing me!

all the ECU did on the metro was operate the boost solenoid which upped the boost to 7psi. Without the ECU it'll just run off the actuator which is 4psi.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

you can then use a bleed valve to up the boost to whatever you like/engine can put up with!!!

I could safely say 99% of turbo owners on this site don't use the ecu.
