just wondering, has anyone fitted a cosworth 4x4 intercooler in position just behind the front of the bonnet above the spark plugs without cutting bonnet holes? so like on an angle which catches the air flow? or is that an un-efficient place to put it? not sure it'll fit and still get flow there dude. If you're planning it, best use a 2wd one as they're not as deep. The 4wd will be right up against the block so you won't get much flow through. |

ahh ok! thats why i was wondering because this 4x4 one is huge! I wonder if a 2wd one will fit without bonnet holes and still get good flow.

Might be an idea to tilt the bonnet so its open a bit at the back so air can come in the grill and out the back of the bonnet over the screen ?

If you want to stick with the sleeper look, i'd just go for a smalled cooler like a rst one. There was a nice one on here recently that had been fitted in the offside wing, would be keen to see how well that worked.

Air will always take the easier path, unless forced otherwise! If there is no holes infront of your cooler it won't flow in that direction.

Thats what I hope to do, with the MJ and a side mount rad you might be able to get it down low enough to almost be behind the grill. Maybe some ducting could be used to help. We need someone that has one fitted to clear this up. On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

I managed to get a Pace alloy intercooler from a Renauult 5 GT Turbo. It's not much bigger than the standard R5 Cooler but it has 2 cores and is much more efficient. I haven't attempted to fit it yet, but I can't see it being a problem.

When I researched it years ago, most of their intercoolers were same as standard, except with alloy end tanks. I just dumped the plastic end tanks of new cores, and made up aluminum ones that I got welded on. 9.85 @ 145mph

I dont think it will work well unless it can see fresh air that is coming at it at speed. It needs a good flow of air to work.

I thought about angling it down a bit at the front with a bit of sheet metal running between the bottom front endge of the IC down to the grill. Surely this will pick up as much air as a bunch of holes? Well it'll only work if you can get the IC back from the bonnet and not so much that it's tight to the engine. Hmmm. That's what I was planning with mine but I haven't dummied it up yet so might be a daft idea. On 7th Nov, 2008 Nic said:

Holes might allow air in.....but they allow air in anywhere.

thats such a good idea! the ducting from the front grill. About a 1/2 of the area of the grill thats how much air ill duct to it from the front.

thats alright mate. fair play to you theirs another on on net at mo so ill try grab that one. but let me no how u get on. the intercooler i fink is the bugger on mini due to not alot of space and to be fair the hoses for wat they are are a fair bit money. if you fit yours before mine it be off help if i new what pieces you used. i bought some silicone pipe from a place called viper performance . they advertise on ebay. they seemed resoniable price for pieces. nothing fancy like sfs or samco. but does job and looks good in blue. |
