Chaps,

Does anybody know if the inlet ports on the k1100 heads are the same or close to a webber 40/45? I have a 1996 MW with a French dude in who was building a K1100 A series project, and he has a pair of webber 32DCOF twin chokes mounted directly onto the head as per KAD. If anybody (wants to see this I can scan it.) I know that SC or Morspeed do a webber manifold, but I want to keep it all under a round nose bonnet. Before you all chant keep EFI, its for a Pos earth MK1, and I kinda want to keep it simple and retro(ish!).

Cheers,

Choppo:cool:

If you read that article, it tells you that the port spacing is very close to that of the 32 webbers. so unless the 40's or 45's are the same spacing, then i doubt they will fit. I also doubt the webbers will fit under a round nose bonnet without modification to the body work.

Why not use bike carbs as has already been done, they fit straight on.

webbers, in my opinion are bling

So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'...

I was gunna use a set of R1 carbs, i actually bought a set and fitted them to my K1100 head, but with they actually protruded a supprising way forward! I think partly due to the rubber/silicone 'manifold' hoses that are required. They also needed some tweekeing with regaurd to the sliding choke and throttle linkage. Damn cheap mind you, circa 20 quid on ebay!

indeed weber spacing would mean you'd have to move the carbs forward a little to get an intake maifold in there - then you'll need a nose job on the bonnet like the mini in one of the mags recently (8 porter) - I'd have thought bike carbs would be less of an issue - no including sorting the linkage - Antman is going this route - I'm sure he'll be along soon

If Carling made Mini engines
it would probably be like this one!

Jus thought - amals? (Have I spelt that right?!). Small, but are they not buggers to prime and start?

Yes Amals are old tech and very expensive! - current bike carbs aremuch more like it!

I'm here!! Yeah i am going to try and get mine running on a set of Carbs have a set of Mikunis off an R1. I foudn that the carbs fit the original inlet stubs off the k1100 with a piece of reducer silicon hose (45-38mm iirc). The biggest thing i have yet to find out is whether these carbs are still gravity fed from the tank or can wind the fuel pressure up a bit. The only thing i have heard that can be a problem for these carbs is the angle they sit at. I haven't managed to get close enough to any r1s to see!!

As for webers, not unless you have a clubby and can afford the extra space. Amals are a little old and fragile to say the least.

I just did a scan of ebay, the mikunis were my first choice as i know the jetting parts can be obtained from Bogg Brothers who specialise in these bike carb conversions.

Anything else...........

Having said that i don't want to spend too much time on the carbs as injection is gonna be happening fairly soon if things go my way!!!

Forgotten more than most ever know

40/45 carbs have wider bore spacing than smaller side draught versions. Having had Amals in a 8-port head I would choose ANY other carb. They run great but are not that easy to set up and cold start by flloding the carbs under the bonnet is not that convenient.

Hi,
R1 carbs are horizontal, it's only when you get to the injection stuff that it starts running at an angle.
I'd use the BMW throttle bodies, change it to negative earth and go EFI.
You would only have to throw an alternator on there, nothing else is polarity concious, then you could have a radio too! *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

A couple of leads would need swapping I think, most notably the voltage stabaliser as I'm sure it's polarity sensitive (isn't it????)

You can get alternators that look like dynos to but they are pricey.

I'm looking at getting a very early mk1 and I must admit that I'd not want to change it from original spec in any way shape or form! Each to their own...

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Hi,
Voltage stabilser no problem, it only a bit of resistanc ewire wraped around a bimetal strip. You can still use the dyno if you wanted just by "flashing" it.
But I would think an alternator would be better for running the coilpack and injectors at idle when you've got the lights on etc.
Cheers,
Gavin :)
