I have a small crack in the heater pipe (the one which curls back up over the manifold) on my turbo engine.

Can this be swapped for a non turbo water heated cooper manifold or is it different?

My other alternative is to cut this pipe a little shorter as my mini heater pipe will be able to reach.

Your thoughts please

just bypass the pipe.

all it really does is heat up the intake air slightly, not really what you want on a turbo motor.

It does heat the manifold yes but you may want that on a turbo Mini, but only if it's a daily driver and running low boost!

Turbo manifold is taller than any other SU manifold I have come across to clear the turbo by a sensible margin.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I could weld it but it's on the bend and I'm not the best at welding.

But I could cut it off just before the bend?

"Turbo manifold is taller than any other SU manifold I have come across to clear the turbo by a sensible margin."

So my manifold from my n/a engine will not fit?

Does this mean that in order to run more boost I will need to change my manifold?

You don't need to change the manifold for more boost. If your going to push the boost up a fair bit it'll be best to take the manifold out of the coolant circuit.

Mitsi Evo 7, 911, Cossie. & all the chavs ...... won no problem

my advice is to cut it off before the bend i have done this no problems

and may be extend the rubber hose a little

i would run the rad coolent through this as it helps the back pocket on economy and if you intend to run silly boost figures in the future

british leyland got this manifold just right for the turbo engine

(keep it) its hard to beat if at all................*wink*

Wouldn't the coolant flow also help to keep the manifold cool when the car is sat in traffic?

it depends if you run a intercooler or not.
im sure iv read in a post not that long ago that if you have a intercooler, the water would heat it all, but if you dont run a intercooler, then it would cool it.

hope that makes sence!?

in generall leave it plumbed up as its supposed to be
this means Extra! miles per gallon for the back pocket

there are many whys and wherefors about this!

Hi,
In winter it's essential, more so if you've got an intercooler fitted.
My current manifold has no provision for heating, so once the carb ices up it runs rougher than a bears arse (aledgedly.)
If you park it up for 15 mins and let ice melt it'll be ok after.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

performance will be enchanced for only a few minuits if you dont couple the manifold up

then the under bonnet temps will quickley rise effecting, reducing fuel octane to a few points less

this inturn has a marked effect on the boost you run reducing it by some 2 to 3 psi before detanation sets in (less power) *frown*

this case is helped some what by the fitment of a 74deg thermostat,

the engine all runs nice at this temp canceling out, the under bonnet temps in the manifold allowing higher fuel octane not to be reduced throug hot spots if the manifold is plumbed up

some may argue but.......... this is the case!

Benross's experiences match my own. If it's a daily driver or indeed any sort of road car fit an IC to look after a boost and connect up to the water so that you can get a bit better economy for when it's off boost .... which to be fair is probably most of the time and maybe keep it from icing in the chilly months!!!

I still am of the opinion that for a big banana race motor there is no real need or advantage to running heating on the manifold.
Having said that the shear volume through-put of charge going into a high power lump at high revs means it's never going to be in the manifold for long enough to really get heated so there is probably no real disadvantage either..

Like so much in tunning it's a compromise and all down to what you want from the finished package.
