I was ripping off the dash of my project mini the other day only to be confronted by quite serious rust around the air vents behind the wings- same place as this guy:

My current plan is to just cut out all the rot and then just weld some blank plates over the hole. Is this ok to do or is there some reason I should keep hold of the vents?
Cheers

There is no sense crying over every mistake- you just keep on trying til you run out of cake.

cut them out, weld it up, early minis did'nt have dash vents, probolu less likely to rot in that area again too!

I, predictably, have to disagree!

If you ever want to do any sort of trackday, or ever drive your car in summer, you will roast in 2 minutes dead without air flow.

On a track day windows and sunroofs have to be shut to keep your bits inside the wreckage in the event of an accident.
In summer you can't have the windows open a speed or your ears will be destroyed.

Just my opinion.

The preper repair panels aren't expensive, even genuine ones, and it looks liek you'll need them on the A-pillar anyway!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

in that respect rogerM i do agree, they do have there purpose on the circuit, trackdays etc!

i admit i am a fan of the heat tho & in the car it does'nt bother me at all, most ppl do like some cooler air in the cabin, my mini is my daily so i can crack a window open & sweat on a trackday :)

Katy TEXAS

I currently am deciding wether to keep them as vents or not, but for now I think I will just bolt some solid plates over them (with wax oil) so I can convert back if required.

Its just if I get a nice after market dash they have vent holes in and I might need some where to mount the in car vents to fill the holes ??

*smiley*

BTW - I took my buddy VTEC Pete out for a spin this weekend, and even though I am running her in, he gave it a name, the "Brocket"...cause I'm a brocket maaannn, nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah nah....
