I used minispares vernier set on my 998, fanastic quality i thought, at the time i fitted it I checked the simplex set I had and when timing my cam in I found it to be pretty close (but with the vernier finer adjustment could be made), so with that in mind I have opted for minispares non vernier duplex set for the engine im now assembling, as Im not after huge bananas. It may vary however from timing kit to timing kit.

the reason i ask is because of differance in price & what you've said, if the timing is pretty much on the money with the non-adjustable type then for a road car i dont feel i need it, whats the opinions chaps SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

I always use them as it's a pig if you don't and need to swing the timing. I've seen some improvement on the rollers over the years with swinging the timing. Although it's not major bananas usually but quite often you can find a fair bit in the mid range without loosing out at the top by subtle swings of the timing. Every day is a school day ...........

my 998 turbo i'm building is to be my daily reliable-ish runabout, so would non-adjustible be ok or vernier best, i'll be running megajolt too, big bananas are'nt really what i'm after, i'm trying to get the mix of high revving & the tug of the turbo Edited by clubminiflip on 12th Feb, 2007. Belt drive is defo better for long term adjustment. Never really had a problem with timing chain stretch on a duplex in a turbo lump. For a race car I'd go belt drive vernier. Fast road car, vernier duplex. Rebuild on a standard duplex unless your planning on fiddling with it on the RR .... not easy unless you have front mounted rad so you can get the timing cover off quikely! My cam jammed this summer. A follower snapped and fell between the cam and block. What would've happened if I didn't have a belt I dare not think. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

so really the non-vernier duplex with a small selecton of offset keys would be a better option for a daily driver in a situ of cost over near-perfect timing & bananas SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

Vernier stuff is great, at a price. However if you're doing just one engine verniers are good. If you're doing several, you might as well have a small selection of offset keys. On 13th Jul, 2012 Ben H said:

I relly dont understand why a vernier setup is in any way useful unless you have acess to it so you can play with it on the rollers.

personally i fitted one so i can adjust my valve timing exactly to where i wanted it where i want it, i dont think its a nessesity but they arent really that much dearer than normal ones are they? no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.
