I used minispares vernier set on my 998, fanastic quality i thought, at the time i fitted it I checked the simplex set I had and when timing my cam in I found it to be pretty close (but with the vernier finer adjustment could be made), so with that in mind I have opted for minispares non vernier duplex set for the engine im now assembling, as Im not after huge bananas. It may vary however from timing kit to timing kit.
But now you bring up the question I am interested to hear others opinions.
Shane.

the reason i ask is because of differance in price & what you've said, if the timing is pretty much on the money with the non-adjustable type then for a road car i dont feel i need it, whats the opinions chaps

I always use them as it's a pig if you don't and need to swing the timing. I've seen some improvement on the rollers over the years with swinging the timing. Although it's not major bananas usually but quite often you can find a fair bit in the mid range without loosing out at the top by subtle swings of the timing.

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

my 998 turbo i'm building is to be my daily reliable-ish runabout, so would non-adjustible be ok or vernier best, i'll be running megajolt too, big bananas are'nt really what i'm after, i'm trying to get the mix of high revving & the tug of the turbo

Hi,
It's all well and good setting it up spot on with a vernier, but you've still got the chain.
How long will it be before chain wear undoes your handy work?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

i considered a 2nd-hand belt drive but was'nt sure, there are many types knocking about,

i'm considering the standard duplex kit-due to price & the gains frm the vernier are'nt going to be much are they????.....

Belt drive is defo better for long term adjustment. Never really had a problem with timing chain stretch on a duplex in a turbo lump. For a race car I'd go belt drive vernier. Fast road car, vernier duplex. Rebuild on a standard duplex unless your planning on fiddling with it on the RR .... not easy unless you have front mounted rad so you can get the timing cover off quikely!

i would of thought that a chain would be stronger than a belt?
i thought that some modern cars were going back to a chain, could be wrong though!

Hi,

A chain is stronger, but a belt doesn't stretch *wink*
Modern cars have better chain lubrication and hydraulic tensioners to overcome the stretchie problem.
Roger .. I see where your coming from, with the tamer profiles used on turbo engines it's not going to stress the timing gear too much.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

time in using the dots then use ofset keys for about £3 each to get timing right and save quiet a few quid in the process.

i think only worth using on NA race engines but once optimum timing has been found you can use just a offset woodruff and save ££££

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

My cam jammed this summer. A follower snapped and fell between the cam and block. What would've happened if I didn't have a belt I dare not think.

so really the non-vernier duplex with a small selecton of offset keys would be a better option for a daily driver in a situ of cost over near-perfect timing & bananas

Vernier stuff is great, at a price. However if you're doing just one engine verniers are good. If you're doing several, you might as well have a small selection of offset keys.

I fitted the Kent roller style chain/vernier to mine when it came out....

Which is a little odd. As Rover V8's have a roller chain, and switch to a duplex as an upgrade lol...

i've only heared bad things about the kent roller type chain thing.

personaly i use a duplex chain with lightened pulleys and a standard key.

is that the 'Power chain' thing they do with wide teeth across the whole cog?

I won one of those off ebay, but never used it as it was so heavy compared to my vernier duplex setup.

I relly dont understand why a vernier setup is in any way useful unless you have acess to it so you can play with it on the rollers.

Otherwise just use offsett keys. To change a vernier without a hole in the case for acess you would have the pull off the case anyway and if you do that you might aswell fit a differant key. A key change is what? 5min job with the cover off, if that.
