just after what most of you guys do, do you clean up & paint the gearbox & clutch housings or just clean them up with a wire brush on a drill & leave as is

all has been soaked in degreaser & jetwashed & i'll probobly attack the parts with a wire brush on my drill, but want it to look tidy when i'm all finished, i just dont want to paint parts then for it to flake as i've seen happen on other engines, its a shame if you put the effort to building a new motor & make it look all spangly for it to look shit cause of flaky paint, i'd be so gutted SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

Is it A-Series only? I think it should be... So when some joey comes on here about how his 16v turbo vauxhall is great compared to ours, he can be given the 'bird'... On 26th Oct, 2004 Tom Fenton said:

the ally box & transfer casings dont seem to be painted as standard from the factory, thats the other reason i was a lil jubious about painting them, i've never had ally take paint to well myself, if i went to a fine-ish grade with scotchbrite wheels it should look standard should'nt it SKYLINES ARE LIKE CLITS, EVERY FLANGE SEEMS TO HAVE ONE: see this sticker on my silvia

Personally I don't like to see the castings painted, the machine shop I use has a good acid clen bath which leaves most things looking pretty clean anyway, once they have had a gose dose of jetwashing afterwards.

i'll do some pics of this progress on my housings this week as i'm doing these before the gearbox, they are going to get another dose of degreaser & jetwashing tomorrow & i'll make a start with the wire brush in a drill, slightly off topic but still with the housings,

i wouldnt risk wire brushing the ally, it will leave a 'scoured' finish.

It's ok to use wire bushes so long as they are the crimp type not notted ones. Helps if you take a large does of subtlety with breakfast.

I used nitromorse paint stripper to remove the layers of rainbow pain it had been painted in, then masked up all flat ground areas and glass blasted polished degreased and given a coat of clear heat resistant varnish result looks good. |
