Hi,
It's the time / money conundrum.
If you want to spend lots of time making a manifold, buying in a length of the correct stainless pipe, making all the flanges, etc. But if you think that your time is worth a least £10 p/h, plus the cost of the materials, you would be well over the price Mirage charge for it, and it comes with the downpipe too!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

You say that, I can (well could) gas weld but with a TIG I just welded the tungsten to the work every 30 seconds. Need a much steadier hand for TIG I found.

plus the fact your going to look a bit of a dick for stealing someone elses design

i have nothing against people making their own one offs, but to start copying, or making a very similar design and selling them is a bit below the belt

the initial outlay of £350 may seem a fair bit, but you soon forget it, not having to mess around with the shell and paint is worth it, you get to use the t2 without needing to struggle to find a turbo manifold for sensible money, rich is a very helpful guy with many an entertaining story, a lifetime warentee so rest assured that if it was to play up you wouldnt lose your £350, and im sure you would find that if you priced up the stainless, welding, and labour there wouldnt be THAT much profit to sell them much cheaper-particularly considering the messing around with several trial and error attempts before hand

Good point nic....
Sometimes its more fun tinkering than buying off the shelf parts, if you got the time and of coarse skint.....lol
I'm very guilty of copying & modifing I'm afraid :(

The problem is that at the moment, you can't buy a Mirage kit.

This is seriously holding up my 998 Turbo engine installation.

Hence the money I had for the kit has gone towards machine tools to make my own.

It's actually going to cost about 6 times as much and take a lot of time.

But seeing as I need the tools to make the EFI intake then it's worth it.

Plus I now have the option of using the Gt1752 turbo.

I do not have time, at the moment, to offer to make them for anyone else.

Bit harsh to say your stealing someone elses design.
I'm sure if I made a manifold that bolted in place with no bulkhead modifications, then without even seeing a mirage one, it would look very similar.

like i said, i have nothing against people making their own for their own use, i found benjamin's thread very interesting and was pleased with what he did

but then if your going to start making and selling virtually the same product to try and make yourself a profit then i would think your a twat and hope that your pile of stainless pipework fell down, crushing both of your arms leaving you disfigured for life

You mean being inspired by and improving don't you????

Certainly true of the simply excellent bulkhead box you sent me!!!

Nic ....... I know what your saying and why you are saying it but.

Would you only buy Minilites from Minilite?
Revolutions from revolution?
Wood and Picket arches from W&P?
Would you never consider a PC with an AMD processor just because the first ones ran an Intel?

For a start you drive a Clio Sport do you not????? Did they not just steal that concept from VW's 1970's Golf Gti?

Do you get my point mate? Not having a go but there are very few totally original ideas ..... after all the human race has been a while and there are only so many problems to apply our minds too so it is inevitable that at some point we might have the same solution to a problem as somebody else.

There is a very famous and truthful quote from a very long time ago

"competition improves the bread"

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Whilst I can understand the comments made by Nic, living on the other side of the water gives me a different perspective; especially as the USD is weak and the UKP strong. Someone over here with a little initiative could go to a header manufacturer and get one made that would cost less.

I would say that asking for pics of the mirage layout, then offering your own next month for a lower price would be a little naughty, but It is up to the final purchaser to decide; if they want to purchase off someone who used a thin wall, incorrect grade, and cobbled it together with a low-grade wire without back purging, then that is their choice.
Or they can buy a mirage that sounds like a 100% reliable unit.

There isn't any real way however - in my opinion - that someone could be charged with 'copying' the mirage manifold; afterall if the turbo is to fit in the limited space between the block and bulkhead, there aren't many choices...

So can it be done....using a standard turbo manifold...and have a single pipe going to the turbo which is on the housing? Could be cost effective. Not sure what size pipe you would need.

i see both sides, but ulimately its just a manifold, no matter who makes em im sure theyre all gonna look *about* the same.... look at the ones that can be used with stage 1 kits - lots of manufactures but all very similar.

but, we're all entitled to our opinions hey *wink*

*happy*

me too...I like making things to save money for myself & others....but Nic is right....manifolds would be tricky...and you could earn a bad name...especially if it goes wrong with the people on TM. You have to be good at what ever you do to pull it off
