Help! I took my mini to work today and when I got home and tryed to reverse my car in the garage and everytime I put it into reverse it cuts out!

I cant rev it, just dies. Its never been like this before I dont know what the hell is wrong?

Please someone help me I cant leave my car out on the street I got no tax and I live in Merthyr Tydfil lol it be gone in the morning.

Ive noticed latley the revs drop when I press the brake but it hasnt realy affected it much

do you have reversing lights, maybe a short somewhere, or does it cut out in all gears, bit more info needed i think

I think it could be electrical as well.

Maybe due to some fault in the wiring there is a huge load going on a weak /discharged battery and the result is enough of a voltage drop to loose the spark.

Anyway, if you taking your un taxed car to work you must be using a trailer or similar so what is the problem bringing it back the same way?????

Can't you just push it into your garage, at least that way its out of harms way(Mr Plod) and work on it there.

Check all the earth connections on your car, clean them and I am certain your problems will dissapear.

If it does it on brake and reverse I'd check the fuse box for crap connections.

Hi I checked and the reverse lights were not working so i checked over the wire and where it comes through underneath the car was bare wire touching I replaced it. I though it was going to be alot worse than that. phheeww! cheers guys i think ill post some pics of my car

Its def electrical when the car is running if i put on the inicators, rear heated screen or put it in reverse the car cuts out! is this just down to bare wire on the body draining all the power do you think?

I've not got a wiring diagram to hand (not that I ever wire one up in the original way) but are they all on the same connection at the fuse box (live feed or fused side)????? Might be a problem there.

What is the voltage across the battery with both the ignition off, engine at idle and engine reved to say 2500RPM???

I'm begining to wonder if the alternator is goosed.

When I disconnect the reverse switch and put it in reverse the car does not cut out! I took of the heater and checked wether any of the wires near the bulkhead box hand been singed but there all fine!

Do you think it is something to do with my fuse box because there all on the same fuse.

I was driving the metro around for a while and never had no problems with the alternator so dont think its that and it has a new batterey.

Any Ideas?

Try disconnecting the live feeds from the fuse box and instead connecting the fuse box to the main live (big cable, at starter). If it works now then you probably have a problem with the live feed to the fuse box.
If no different then it is the box or the fused side wiring.

Next thing to try is to remove both fused side and live feed from fuse box and link together, bypassing the fusebox. If it works now it's fuse box, if not then it is definately in the fused side wiring somewhere.
