Hi,
Would a spring that strong (to cope with the torque) cause thrust bearing problems?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

In one answer - no - as it's way less than a grey (as regards what axial load the thrust washers see).

Hi,
That's good to know Dave. So how much boost would that be, roughly?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Ditto,

Very interesting although I still prefer robert's dual spring £30 setup.

The weight is less important on a road car. Sometimes having more flywheel inertia is a good thing. My kit car runs a lery light flywheel assembly along with a fairly hot cam (for a turbo application) ...... even though she is very light and first gear isn't too tall she is still a pig to drive in heavy traffic. She is actually that bad that at most trackdays she goes to I have to trailer her their as stalling it every time you pull away or lighting the tyres up each time makes you look like a bit of prat!!
Slipping the clutch results in it being more or less useless by the time you get out to do a lap......

She is a road legal track car, as my Mini will be so engine response is everything.

With the Mini I'm building for Candice being intended as a daily driver I'd not consider a lightened flywheel of any nature as it is more important to retain the idle and drive take up characteristics of a production car.

Horses for course .... like so much else to do with car specs .... it's all down to the intended use!

Hi,
I'm going to run 10psi as a daily driver, possibly with the Mems running fuelling off boost, so would this cope with 10psi?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

how do you machine a flywheel to increase clamping pressure ? for use with any random clutch ?

9.85 @ 145mph
202mph standing mile
speed didn't kill me, but taxation probably will

I wish I knew Stevie!!

I have spoken to Stuart and it sound as if he has had some special covers made to his own specs.

The 140lbft clutch should just bolt up in place of the original, no flywheel mods needed. Should be a great clutch for those wishing to use the stock transmission on a road car. Stuart suggested a reasonable price, to my mind, for supply only. It's best to ring him however as he offered me a couple of kits with different driven plates at different prices.

I didn't really discuss the 220lbft unit in depth but I do remember Stuart saying the pedal force required to disengauge is similar, if slightly less than, a grey cover.

For my pound currently I'd wait to see what Turbo Dave's unit is going to be capable off. That said if I had to make a choice here and now I'd give the Vmax 220lbft clutch a try for a very powerful road car but for a track car it would still be a light pre verto set-up with a grey/double grey.

I think the 140lbft capable unit is well worth a shot for what I am looking for!!!

Hi,
Would you machine the lugs lower as you do with the lightened flywheel and grey cover setup?

It's a verto arrangement ... still some fine tuning possible though.

12psi on a good motor will start to show it slipping

you say 10psi buddy but you always want to rase it in the future to bash the chavs etc

Hi,
I'm looking for something that I can drive for 2 hours, get out of and still hear what people are saying to me! Straight cut drops and 'box are not on my shopping list so I'm going to modulate the boost down for the most part.
If I want to blow some doors off I'll get the Cossie out the garage *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Gavin and I (for Candice's car) are looking for the same thing. A refined but pokey road going Mini. No straight cut anything (except 1st and reverse which we have no choice over) and moderate boost over higher CR. The motor will never see a CR lower than the standard 9.4:1 in Candice's car and I doubt very much that it will run more than 8psi most of the time.

Once you say DEFINATELY no fancy bits in the box and proper, use it to get to work, daily driver specification then a slight lack of response from the ultimate due to a heavier flywheel (I prefer to call it mass assisted anti stall device .....) is much less important than packaging (which the Verto helps with ... IC can go above the heater air intake which needs to stay in place without the pipes getting caught up in the clutch mechanism).

It's horses for courses really. When Turbo Dave gets his sollution out in the field I will have one of those for my car but if this works well for a road build I'm going for it on Candice's car.

Roger,

If you have ordered one, can you please takes some photos and dimensions before you fit it. The diameter and thickness of the diaphragm spring will tell us a lot.

My 998 turbo is all packaged up with the heaviest duty verto I could find, but I'm not expecting it to last long, so the 140 lbft version may be what I need.
