A quick question for you, what is the maxium current a 16mm2 cable can safely manage? (240v)

Thanks
Jim

Hi,
Cooker cable is 6mm2 throw 40A down that no problem. I take it you're talking 16mm2 per conductor, not 16mm2 overall! You'll have to downrate the cable if its a long run.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I'm building a new workshop at the moment, a good friend gave me some 16mm2 cable, I'm going to use it to supply my workshop. Sounds like it will be up to the job! Cheers JF *wink*

Lowestoft, Suffolk.

A few things need to be considered, its not jus as simple as will it take the current? instalation method, length of run (for volt drop) all have an effect on cable sizing for the circuit, if you Pm me all the details of what your planning, inc where your feeding it from what your having in your workshop load wise etc, ill do the maths for you.

As a rule Jim, around 80 amps if it is normal 6491x single copper or 6242y twin and earth.

If its tri-rated or similar it will hold more like 100 amps.

If its only 10 metres you'll have no problems with 80+ amps.
