Last night I decided to drop a few litres of oil in and this morning there's a pool of oil...I havn't even started the bugger yet!!!

Looks to be the right side output flange paper seal I should have used the special ones with the sillicone bead.. Ahh well another job for the punch list.

BTW Did you know that Mini engines are made of a special metal that attracts oil?? True.... they attract oil from the ground in the surrounding area and it pools underneath the engine... In fact the attraction is so strong that some of the oil from the pool actually makes the leap up to the engine.. Amazing!!!

You never really get rid of oil leaks on minis, you just shift the leak around from one part of the engine to the other.

Jay you can make them oil tight .... it just takes a lot of effort and several attempts .... engine together ... leak found ..... engine apart .... leak fixed ... engine together .... new leak ... LOL

Making sure every surface as flat and clean as possible before the first assembly and use the best gaskets you can find.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Your right currently I am leak free, the timing cover seal is a little sweaty but that will be rectified when I put on my new pulley for the MJ. But there is nothing worse than stringing an engine together carefully only to find it has to come out again becasue of an oil leak.

True enough Jay.

I normally leave the engine built up full of fluids in the garage for a week or so before I fit it. Normally finds the weak spots except the crank seal to the timing cover as you state. Even turning the engine on it's side won't always find that one :(

I think Roger means on the Diff side cover where the pot joint goes into the 'box?

The part your talking about seems to be where the gear selector goes into the back of the 'box, there should be a dynamic seal in there no O ring as far as I recall though.

Mines started leaking and has covered a grand total of 100miles. I removed the engine with a leak...fitted a completely different 'box, fitted new gaskets and seals....and you guessed it it still leaks!

I might fit an O ring with a larger profile, as the one supplied doesn't look the best fit in the world!

OK

The gear selector has the "special" seals and its not leaking there anyway, Its deffo the flange seal, The selector detent spring must be just cracking it open. I have ordered up the flange seals with silicone beads as they worked a treat for me last time, luckily the car is still up on axle stands and the wheels are off so its halfway there anyway, at least I found the leak before I finished the install.

Just re-read the post...I saw the part about the plunger and thought of the gear selector. *blush*

Where are you getting the seals with silicon beads from, sounds like they might do the trick.

I think minispares do one,

http://www.minispares.com/Product.aspx?pid=35957

I actually ordered it from minimania for a change, shipping from UK is quite high for something as cheap as that.

Nope ... I meant the crank seal around the timing cover ..... I have had so many of these leak on engines built by other people who somehow mess up fitting them ....

Timming chains .... got to love them.

Seriouslt though the main reason I like belt drive kits is the seal in them actually .... well seals!

Aha... That would explain one of the leftover O rings from the gasket set... I looked high and low and never saw that one. possibly its from a later model only?? anyway I'll fit it this time, cant hurt can it. Cheers Gavin/Hogster
