Was dicking around on solidworks today, and came up with my design for the joining pipe between manifold and turbo for a clutch housing mounted turbo.

Guessed a little with the manifold flange, as i still not sure what i'll be using as i can't find a std turbo one on ebay.

but the turbo flange is for a little IHI turbo from a charade GTti.

What you should make, is two pipes that allow the standard turbo to be fitted over the clutch housing. That means one pipe from the turbo exh manifold to the turbo, and one from the turbo and down. This means you can easily fit the standard stuff WO fitting a bulkhead box. You'd sell hundreds!

Hi,
How about using a standard MPi / SPi manifold?
Then pipe work like Vegard says, one set for the IHI, lots of sets for T3/2s *wink*

Gavin :)

Yeah was looking at the Mpi ex manifold, but was really holding out for a turbo one with a neater flange, has anyone got any pics of one?

The pipe just requires a different turbo flange to mate any turbo i suppose, so T2 or T3 or whatever......

I was going to send the exhaust pipe from the turbo through the brace bar and into a little bike can behind the a panel exiting just behind the front wheel.

just added a mock up manifold to see what it would look like attached. I'll try to do a basic turbo to stick on the other end.

You might find that the bike can isn't quite enough to prevent the police from taking an interest in your car!

I'm 100% sure but I think there is something in the construction and use regs that state the exhaust must exit behind the driver ..... they don't want you dieing of carbon monoxide poisoning whilst driving!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

That looks wicked, it would be great if some one started making a manifold like this and making them for sale.

Chappers, don't want to piss on your Bonfire but that manifold will not fit on any Mini. The turbo would be situated right at the end of the crank / engine mount area.
To fit where you suggest it will the pipe would need to sweep upwards by a considerable amount.

Dave

No Jason ... not jealous .... just trying to help. I had a mate that built a custom hot-rod that was laughed at when it went for inspection!

The car had been built to a very high standard but it was never allowed on the road. He had to rip it back to a bare frame and rebuild it again with all new body work, exhaust and loads of other things.

All that grief just because he couldn't be bothered to read up on what is and isn't allowed and wouldn't listern to people who knew!!!

cheers for your suggestions guys,

danboy, yeah i see what you mean, the manifold is just a rough drawing at the moment, not took any proper measurements yet, but that the beauty of CAD, when i do take some i'll just edit the dimensions and the drawing will change itself.

RogerM, yeah i was unsure where to route the exhaust, thanks for the advice, think i'll route it down the normal route under the car then.

I can finally update guys.

Had the engine running now, the manifold and downpipe solidworks idea can be done in the future. I made a bodged up one and i picked the massive brains of certain people on here.

I've had the engine running, just needs a bit of attention to the manifold as the welding is not great (blows in a couple of places) and the carb needs setting up, will have a look at the ignition (megajolt me thinks).

Just gotta do : brakes master, hoses, discs, driveshafts, clutch master, wheels, interior etc..........LOL

PS a vid is on here

Well i had a problem, but now it's sorted.

Do you ever have a problem, but overthink about it? bypassing the easy solution, maybe your subconscously avoiding doing some work. LOL

Just me?? A well...............

The engine started, which was nice, trouble was thats all i had planned up to! JUst wanted to see if i could!!

Problem was that it sounded rough, like a mower, my Dad likened it to his mini "in 1960 something..." , running on 2 cylinders.

and the idle was all over the place, it was drawing in air, i thought between the carb and manifold, so new gaskets, still same, i thought the turbo might be broken somehow?!

felt for air leaks everywhere, but just exhaust gas coming from the holes in the welds of the homemade manifold. maybe its the ex manifold, took ages to take eveything off, noticed the ex gasket wasn't sealing the inlet manifold, DOH!!!

rewelded all the holes in the ex manifold, new gasket.

bish bash bosh with all the stuff and i got it running nice and smooth idle and all that. :)

just got to weld the 2 downpipes together, initailly it was going to be able to sleeve and clamp just near the gearbox, but it runs too close to the pot joint so a clamp is too big to get in.

There is a vid on here of smooth running but with blowing downpipe.
http://www.turbominis.co.uk/index.php?p=15

998 turbo

next thing to make is the billet engine stabiliser mount with a notch cut out, the original won't fit around the manifold.

Cheers
Chris
