Just out of curiousity and after handling built manifold assemblies from the metro, and my t2 mirrage setup, (inc turbo) I noticed a fair weight difference, so I popped both setups on the scales in the workshop and was supprised. The metty assy weighed 12.450 kg, and the mirage set up weighed 6.950kg 5.5 kgs less, doesnt sound alot but in the bigger picture........

o yer but doesnt the mirage setup restrict flow?
so the weight you saved is then effectily put back on with possibly more weight by bad flow?

make any sense??

So in that case would it be possible to make a custom alloy manifold or would it not be able to cope with the heat?
What about a titanium one?

If by alloy you mean aluminium no,

the melting point of aluminium is around 600deg and i think there's some aluminium alloys that melt around 800, might be ok for an exhaust from the down pipe back but not for the manifold.

Ti and Inconel both have high melting points I'd imagine this makes them a pain to weld? also sodding expensive, this brings you back to either steel or stainless steel.

Also I don't think the Mirage "restricts" the flow that much as the pipe diameters all look bigger, its just the way that the pipes from 1 and 4 face each other that bothers me.

Don't think its as critical as a normally aspirated manifolds mini13

It would be interesting to see the results of a back to back test....

Hi,
The thing to bear in mind is the exhaust pulses don't all arrive at the same time.
Nics car apparently goes like sh*t off a shiney shovel, So they can't be too bad *wink*

its used in high temperature exhaust ducting. they used it on the wessex and seakings. i have some sheets somewhere!!!!!!!

its heavier than titanium by the way!! (and its about 8 times more expensive too!!!!!)

I very possibly may have done!! All i know is a picked up an ex F1 manifold made from whatever it is

that was shaped like a pretzel and it was considerably lighter than my manifold

God i thought we had put this "restricted flow" to bed Nic, think you had better win this year !! lol.

I'd say the manifolds loose a bit on the pulse from the side cylinders, but the centre shared port is very short and is pointing straight down the turbine, so it gets a strong pulse on each of the pulses down the centre.

Remember that putting a turbo in your exhaust makes the design of the system very different from a NA setup where you tune the exhaust so the exiting charge creates a lower pressure at the valve end to help scanvenge the cylinder. You dont get this with a turbo.

5.5kg, thats almost 1% of car weight if its already been on a diet.

If you fancy Inconel bear this in mind. I had a set of thin wall stainless bananas made for an historic F1 (V8) made about 3 years ago, these cost £3500 and the company quoted me nearer £7000 for the Inconel !!! Owwwwwwww
