Do i need all 3 mirrors present on a 1979 car for the MOT.

My passenger side door mirror is cracked, i have a new one to replace it but i need to buy a rivnut gun before i can fit it. Problem is i cant afford the rivnut gun to do it. So i was planning on just removing it completely.

Would it pass with just a driver's door and rear view?

I was told that you must have the drivers mirror and one other, but the other can either be the passenger side one or the internal one and doesnt matter which.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

3 mot stations did not pick up on it then, each one a different place and nothing was mentioned about the mirrors.

The regs for '79 car are indeed drivers side and one other (preferably the interior mirror).

Hi,
You can fit rivnuts with a couple of thick washers and a nut and bolt.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

lol... never thought of fitting a riv nut that way... but i'd be too scared to bugger up the door.

the mirror is now off.. the screws holding it on were siezed, but a quick attack with the drill and its off, even managed to get the remaining bit of screw out.

looks quite cool actually!

This topic came up on another forum...

From what i recall..legally..

Construction and use act requires a car to have 2 exterior, and 1 interior rear view mirror ( from around 86 onwards )

Obviously vans are constructed for a different purpose, and do not require the interior mirror, and in many would be pointless.

Not sure if the MOT picks up all of this, but in terms of the road traffic act...modernish cars require all 3.

From mid 80's cars had to have two exterior mirrors but as Anton's car is a 79 he has no problems..

Hi,

That is the MOT Testers manual for mirrors, that's if it's tested to the manual when you get there..... *wink*

Ok, fairy snuff ....... I was fairly sure there was a change to the construction and use regs mid to late 80s .... obviously I am either incorrect or it didn't follow through to the MOT.

Good post Gavin ....

I'm off to see what else I am wrong about....

Hi,
Rarely do C&U regs have anything to do with MOT, for cars and bikes *surprised*
I didn't even look on there to see what is was, just posted the link a legged it!

Found the info....from a police officer.

Reg 38 of the Motor Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regs 1999 states that:

Mirrors must be fitted to vehicles to aid the driver’s view to the rear.

The number and position of mirrors varies according to the type of vehicle.

Basically vehicles first used on or after 1 June 1978 are required to have at least one adjustable mirror:
(A) fitted externally on the offside of the vehicle and
(B) one with protected edges, fitted internally.

A motorcar first used before 1 June 1978 is required to have at least one mirror fitted either internally or externally.

Mirrors are fitted to assist the driver to become aware of traffic behind or to the side of the vehicle (external mirrors) and must be fitted in positions to facilitate this.
