Not for the 1st time I offer my gearbox up for sale.

Bear with me on this, it takes a bit of explaining.

For the last 2500 miles i've been running a Jack Knight involute dog box in the mini. I acquired this box from an engine builder I know for a decent price (700 quid) wthout realising it had non standard ratio's.

The ratio's are closer to a standard mini gearbox so before I put it back on my engine I am going to buy the gears necessary to alter the ratios back to the usual dog box ratios. To do this I need to change the laygear, the 1st motion shaft, 3rd gear and 2nd gear. Or in other words almost the whole gearbox - this is going to cost me 550quid.

I can buy a brand new dog box kit from Jack Knight for 1000quid so I am offering the complete gearkit as it stands for 450 quid.

The ratios are as follows:

3.3
2.131
1.312
1

These are not ideal, BUT this is the cheapest dog gear kit you will ever buy, and for the money you'll get an absolutely bulletproof gearbox.

Any takers?

I get confused with ratios. Is this a low ratio then or a high speed box?

You're thinking of the FD. That has nothing to do with this.

These ratio's would be absolutely BRILLIANT for someone running a 2.7 or 2.9 diff. Basically- it'll allow them the super-high speeds (or relaxed cruising rpm), but without having to slip the clutch to buggery to get off the line - especially when parking on a slight incline for example...

The ratio's are widely spaced - which is probably not ideal for a hi-performance nat-asp, but with a wide-torque spead from a forced induction, they could be considered to be a greater benefit -especially on non-lightened vehicles that aren't so easy to get moving.

In short - buy these, couple them with a 2.7CWP, and the first gear would be like having a conventional sc trans, along with a 3.44 diff.

3rd gear would take you to 110mph at 7000rpm with a 2.75 diff...

Hi Gavin,

Its a dog engagement gearbox, so theres no synchromesh to make the changes easy like a standard box.

If you can live with that you will actually find that the gears whine a lot less than a synchro straight cut box as the teeth are a lot wider.

Hi,
Is it a bit heavy on the gear shift, then?
Can you do clutchless changes like on a bike?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thats not an easy question to answer, there is a knack to driving them, but if you have it they are as easy to drive as a synchro box.

Contrary to popular belief you don't need to slam them in and out of gear, the more gentle you are the better they work.

If you watch this video you will see the clutchless gearchanges I do, you can just spot the clutch pedal if you look closely.

Hi,
No you're right, you've got to feel the gears in.
It looks like a lot of fun, but not for me. I think this is just the job for Matt the dentist though!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Thanks for all the interest chaps, I'll try to mop up all the queries i've had by PM here if I can.

Firstly, the sale will include the gearkit only, that is everything you would get if you bought a new gearkit off Jack Knight - the assembled mainshaft, the layshaft and the 1st input shaft.

The bearings in the box are 2500 miles old so you would be pretty safe dropping it straight in your case and driving away i'd have thought. It uses standard selectors so there are no modifications needed to the gearbox.

I'm located in Bromsgrove in the west mids, so if anyone nearby wants to see the box its still built up in the case at the moment.

I'm happy to post it anywhere at the buyers cost, I also have paypal but I would ask the buyer to cover the fee's (3% I think) as i've been stung by that before.

Any other questions please don't hesitate, I do have a chap off Minifinity interested who got in touch with me very quickly so I must offer him first refusal.

Cheers,
Dan

I tend to trust most of you fella's as I get the impression this isn't your average mini forum.....to be fair I should offer the box out in order of the contact that was made to me which puts Mr. mini23 1st in line, followed by RogerM then Fab (hope you don't mind me divulging this info chaps)

I'm more than happy to send it out to france if fab is the eventual buyer.

Cheers,
Dan
