Got a bit of a garden project on the go at the moment and am after some advice if any can help. There is a large mound of soil that I'm going to use to level the garden and then lay a new lawn.
I want a good lawn for my daughter to play on, so should I remove the old grass first, or should I just level the soil over the top? Googling says I should remove it, but there is a fair bit to shift and quite a bit of soil so I'm wondering if it's worth the bother.

Thanks in advance :)

here's a my own view neil

(been helping out my brother in-law who's a landscape gardener most weekends for about 8 years)

i'd cut the grass real short, so you basically skin it, then try and rake it to break it up a bit, then level it all with the soil you've got, then your ready for turf or seed

it might be getting a bit late in the year for turf, as grass is getting scorched with hot its been so far this year, you might get away with it if you keep it nicely watered

you might be okay with seed but could be a bit slow growing, make sure you put plenty of seed down, then rake over to set the seeds just below the surface, then spread a few seeds over for the birds to have without digging for the ones under the surface

Hi,
Run a rotovator over it? Does the job without getting the turf up *wink*

Just flatten it out and cover it with seed. It will be fine. The worst that will happen is the old grass will grow through. Keep it well watered though.

In the garage......again!!

I just leveled mine best i could and turfed straight over it, make sure you weed it good and proper though or the buggers will grow through.

a LIL fishing village on the coast - Newcastle Upon Tyne

lose the grass completely and tarmac it all ! you could get loads of mini projects in there !!!!!

if you dont take my advice, one thing i will say, stay away from BnQ turf its wank ! mine died off, if you water it, always do the watering first thing AM and at dusk. or the water fries the grass with the sun

Lowestoft, Suffolk.

When I dug out a section of my front lawn for a driveway I hired a mini digger for the day, cost £60 and was the most fun I had in ages!!! Spent an hour digging it up, then the rest of the day arsing around with it, highly reccommend it!!!
