OK so heres an obscure one for you;

I have a gas hob in my kitchen, its never been great since I moved in, however tonight trying to boil up a pan of water, even using the largest ring on full heat it was really struggling.

So I am wondering either if my hobs had it, or whether the gas supply pressure to it is low, and hence there is not enough pressure to get a decent amount of heat out of it?

Looking at the gas supply pipe into my meter there seems to be what looks to me like a pressure regulator on the way into the meter.

So what I want to know is, can you test gas pressure? If so how, what ought it to be, and does this screw I have found adjust it??

Hi,
Yes it's a pressure reg, so I think you can adjust it. I think it should be 20mbars.
My Nan had a new meter recently and the gas fire got alot hotter a lot quicker, so we got them back top check the pressure, it was ok. The engineer said it was probably the old reg that was too low.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

In my last house, my gas boiler was crap.

Turned out there was a lump of plaster in the pipe left by the builders.

Gas pressure to the house can vary depending on the proximity to the nearest district govenor, these are normally set to ouput at about 30-45milibar. The output is set so that an extremity point on the system never falls below 17milibar which is the lowest recomended domestic pressure (although can go lower). Therefore your supply can be between these ranges. The pressure through the meter may drop again as newer ones have regulators inside.

If you suspect a problem you should be able to contact your supplier and have an engineer come round, they will be able to help and test the pressure if necessary. If you are having problems i would recomend contacting them, particularly if its irregular as it can be a sign of something a lot more serious.

I'm just wary of the fuckers coming out and charging me £60 to adjust the regulator into the meter.......I'll ring them and see what they say I suppose.

If its a problem with their equipment, and your more than clever enough to work out whats going on when they are doign the work, the local distributors will pay. However, im not 100% sure of where the responsability ends nowerdays, it used to be at the meter but may have changed possibly to the land boundary??

Just call a local corgi engineer. He can adjust the pressure at the meter with the gas suppliers permission. Should be at 20mbar.
