my mate has a 2.2 dti and it goes well, not the quickest thing in the world but its got a lot of torque as its a diesel turbo.
hes happy with it and says that its good on fuel.

hope that helps a bit.

Heard they have diesel pump issues.
A friend had alot of them to fix. They tend to go around 80-90,000 miles. Expensive to get done. Thats modern electronics for you!!!!
Volkswagen/peugoet diesels seen to have a good name

Hi,
Skoda has to be a good bet. VW running gear, only down side is poor looking trim inside...
VW do have some problems with the VTN turbos though....
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I reckon you should get either the focus tdci estate (not sure what they go for now) or the skoda octy estate. If you get one with a pd engine you'll be laughing. Great cars for the money.

Saying that though, i knew someone with a 130 sri vectra diesel and he loved it.

As others say the Vauxhalls are now getting WELL known for injector pump problems, £1000 plus labour and the immob recoding to put it right, have a look on ebay there are always a few Astra/Vectra/Zafiras on there non runners for this problem.
Same also goes for the Ford TDCi engines, starting to have expensive common rail injection faults, also little known is that the injectors and pump are coded together needing re-coding at the Ford dealer if you need to change anything, again leads to big £££.

I'd personally go VAG if you can, as most people know I run an A4 Avant. However personally I'd avoid the PD cars as I have heard these are starting to show serious cam wear issues (PD pumps are cam operated) and stick to the older direct injection non-common rail models, they go plenty well enough and such as a 110bhp 1.9 are very economical too. Alternatively if you want the grunt then look for the 2.5 TDI like mine, but don't expect starship economy as you do sacrifice this for 150bhp and 310Nm. Pulls a trailer great though, I recently moved a small french hatchback that I am sure you'll all guess, 80mph solid as a rock on the motorway uphill downdale 34mpg.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

my old boy has a 1.7td and its ok but not really enough guts for towing although it does a fair bit!! i like it as a van though.

Carl, were they the 1.8d's of old?

We had a 1.3 astra van from new and did over 150k in it, never had a single major component replaced. only routine servicing which was also completed without fail. we had it over 10yrs until the rust started to get to it a bit, but not a lot mind.

Dunno what the modern vauhal desiels are like, but i hate the older ones,

my bro had a few astra desils, the cams are prone to wearing, which means if you take the cam pully off it is the imposible to get the camtiming right as there is no keyway and you have to do the timing from lift @tdc.

Plus the rear wheel bearings tend to spin on the stub axel when they go.

dont get a 307, they have loads of niggly electrical faults and wear brakes out fast and also suspension bushes. can highly recommend 306 1.9td though

Got a pug 406 1.9 turbodiesel at home and it tows very well, It has 90bhp but a lot of torque, 180 1bft. 100,000 miles and no problems for 60k of them only a few electrical niggles when we got the car.

I'd say go for an r reg or something so you get the most refined/developed of the pre common rail diesel engines.

I'd agree with Tom, go for a VAG group car. I've been running them for years and the only fault I've had is a knackered water pump in a golf last year. Now running an A4 2.5TDi avant - not getting to the dizzy heights of 34mpg though!

Only problem will be finding one with a reasonable mileage

Rob, out of interest what do you manage from yours then, mine will do 40mpg if driven gently on a long run m/way, 34mpg trailer, or 29-30mpg round town, its the 150bhp A4 TDi Quattro.

I'm getting 28-29 around town and up to 35 on the motorway. Strangely the missus gets the same in town but can get up to 40 on a run - must be the way I drive it I suppose! The car is the 180bhp model as well but i don't think that makes much of a differance if sitting at speed - apparently the quattro drinks a good bit more over a 2 wheel drive. An old work mate had a 2wd cabrio and was getting 45mpg from it. Wouldn't change it though. Tows like a dream - looking forward to a trip with the trailer from Glasgow to Avon soon!

Well interesting to know, I couldn't really decide if mine was a bit more thirsty than it ought to be, sounds like its about right though.
