So far I have everything wired up and I have tested that the MJ unit has a good earth and power supply so it seams to be live. I am using a USB COM adapter but alas it doesn't seem to be communicating with my laptop (the "commit configuration to flash" button is not lit up). Under device manager there is no options for changing buffers and baud rates and I can't even find my USB ports under device manager, just "universal serial bus controllers- USB root hub". There's no options for changing anything under this other than the driver etc. I am using 3.2.1 version of the software and I have tried changing the COM ports in the config thing. What am I doing wrong? Did a search and I've tried all that was suggested so far in the threads.

Thanks guys!

Serial Adapter is a COM adapter.

What happens when you click "get ignition configurations", does that work?

What if I scabbed an older laptop with a COM port from someone, that would rule out my laptop and the adapter? A girl in my work has an ideal laptop to borrow but I'm shy around girls... I can't remember what it did when I tried to get a config, I know it said at the bottom of the configurator that it "couldn't open port".

Get a real serial port and a mouse extension cable NOT a rs232 cable.

You want all 9 pins of the serial port to connect to all 9 pins of the MJ.

Never had a problem with it, may be I've been lucky.

jay, that one should be fine.

rs232 is com, which is serial, just different names for the same thing.

I have one for sale in the sale section:)

I don't think I have a single computer here still with a real serial port on it except my old file server in the loft. Getting harder to find even on desktop motherboards unless the board is intended for lab / instrumentation use.

There is what looks like a serial port on my Athlon 64 board but it is actually run from the USB via a convertor on the motherboard ..... makes things like megajolt a real pain.

I have used Rob's usb - serial adapter with no problems so some do work, but many don't seem to (including the one on my Athlon board.......)

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Hi,
Have you checked under ports COM&LPT? Right click the name of the adaptor, then properties. Then click the port setttings tab.
Here you can set the baud if you need to.
Also in this window you'll find an advanced button, click this and you can change the port number.
All this is assuming you're running XP...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Dead right - some do and some don't.

I've had a MJ sent back for repairs this week as the guy can't make it communicate - but it works just fine on mine....

I will give it another go tonight and if still no joy maybe try another adapter. Still haven't got the VR sensor mounting braket done yet anyway!

PS, yes I'm running XP but I can't see COM/LPT under device manager, just host controlers and USB root hub. There isn't any options to do anything other than change power settings and drivers either. I'll try and get hold of the local IT dude in my work here. Thanks for your help!

Good point, I got a CD with the unit with solfware and firmware all on it so I'll just stick with that. Tonight should yield a few answers and hopefully some sparks.

Hi,
Unless you've got something really strange going on with windows it should look like this.....

Mine says Bluetooth, yours should be "usb to serial adaptor" or something similar.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Ah thanks Bat. Mines a little different though, it says PCI to USB Open host controller, PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller and 3 USB Root Hubs which I assume corresponds to my 3 USB ports. There isn't any options under these to adjust anything at all other than mess with the drivers and power options. Must nip out to the mini with the laptop now...

Hi,
Have you not got the "Ports (Com&LPT)" line in that list (1/2 way down)?
Can you post up a screen shot?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

You're looking under Universal Serial Bus in the device manager.

You need to look under "Ports"

Saul Bellow - "A great deal of intelligence can be invested in ignorance when the need for illusion is deep."
Stephen Hawking - "The greatest enemy of knowledge is not ignorance, it is the illusion of knowledge."

Press print screen, this will copy the screen to the clipboard. Then just paste this into your editor of choice and save it off.
