I keep trying to use this v max petrol with millers octane boost/lead additive, but the old metty seems to go better if I just put the cheap fuel in.

Any ideas why*oh well*

Hi,
You'll need to advance the timing to get the advantage from the higher octane. The higher octane actually burns a bit slower, that's why the cheaper stuff seems better!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I recall a post to a website that had done some pretty good testing comparing fuels, and supermarket fuel came out better than the 'bling' stuff from Shell / BP.

Anyone remember the post?

That link is fine if you are considering a modern car with knock sensors...

A TMini doesn't - so unless you change the ignition timing swapping fuel is pointless.

When people come to me to get their cars setup I insist that they have a tank of the fuel they are going to be running. If your only going to put 95ron in it there is no point setting it up on Tesco 99 etc (and vise versa).

Alex, I don't quite get your point.
If using a better fuel which is readily available can give more power why set your car up for a lower grade.
If you are caught out and can't find 99 just use 95 and drive steady until you can find 99.
I would have thought the advantage of any 99 fuel was essential on high comp N/A and forced induction engines.
Just as an aside, How do you set up your customers cars? Is there a set proceedure you follow for different load/rpm sites.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards
Dave

I have to admit my car always used to run substantially worse on bp ultimate/shell optimax than the std 95 stuff and am sure it was down to the fact the ignition wasnt setup for it. Though i never did fiddle with it, wish i had now though!

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

people want their cars to run on the cheapish petrol usual. If you setup the engine to run on 95 then 95 is what it should have.

If your prepared to always use 99RON then get it setup on 99RON.

The whole drive slowly thing is fine until you get the red mist racing someone and damage your engine because you are 4 points lower than your engine is setup for....

All I can find in Northern Ireland is the usual 97RON BP ultimate. I just don't know why no one is prepared to bring in anything higher over here. My Clio needs a min of 98 RON but all it gets is 97 I'm affraid.

since the engine has been put in the mini it has never seen anything other thatn shell v max stuff, shell is close enough to make sure thats all thats used, it hasent been set up yet and it behaves differently every day, so if i changed fuel i wouldent be able to say if it was the fuel or the day of the week that made a difference, lol hasent been set up yet tho..

My golf is set up for V-power and boy does it run well .... on 95 (basically there seemed to be no proper fuel around Newquay so had little choice during the riv run) it was a dog .. even when driven gently.

As has been said .... if you are sure your going to be able to run on 99RON then set up on 99 and use only 99.

Some places you can't even get 97 let alone 99 so journeys have to be planned around fuel stops .... a right pain!!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Dan to be honest there is no contest, TomTom wins hands down.

The number of times Candice's Navtec software has sent her the wrong way is amazing!! Once she got within 20m of her destination ..... on the wrong side of the river!!! Was a 17 mile mistake!

The worst I've had with TomTom is the one occasion that it was convinced I was going the wrong way down dual carrageway what hadn't been around long .... almost forgivable.

If I was you I'd look at a PDA version rather than a TomTom unit itself as there are plenty of "free" add ons and plug ins that can get you around the subscription services ...... CheckPoint works VERY well as a camera detector.
