Buying a lid for race use. Wanted to try a bike lid as they are £100+ cheaper as they are not fire retardant. Go to bike shops, but alas all they have is the motorcycle gold sticker no BS or Snell stickers on the back. So thought sod it went to GPR bought a Sparco lid on impulse more than being comfortable. Stupid! Took it back, got a Bell sport 4 lid. Damned comfortable, but then noticed when I got home...no BS or Snell sticker.
Phoned GPR up....had a bloke tell me sticker is inside lid!
So..don't be a complete idiot like me! Check the inside, at the back of the lid underneath the lining! *oh well*

Hi,
Bike helmets aren't tested to snell or BS standards, presumably our heads aren't worth that much?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Actually its JF's sound advice that put me on to bike lids. I can't take any credit for this :) Perfectly safe, only difference is they are not fire retardant & as I've said before £100 cheaper..which is good for clubman racing & trackdays

Hi,
Sorry Jon, they're not anymore!
Now they're only tested to some half baked European standard that lets european showercaps mascarade as helmets!
Cheers,
Gavin :)

I have wondered if the middle man that supply bike shops actually remove labels. They all have that gold bike racing sticking, but they are manufactured to a certain standard. BS for England...snell for the states etc.
Like I said..JF got a new lid with BS sticker on it.

Hi,
That's my point, from what I remember from the article they're not all manufactured to the same standard anymore....
This has only come about in the last 6 months, before that they would be BS marked.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Bat, you are rightish...

I don't think they sell BS approved motorcycle helmets from new anymore but are still available from places with some old new stock...

My lid was manufactured 4 years ago but new.

Here is mine, a Sparco item, I decided on a fire retardant one, burns anywhere on your body are going to hurt, but your face/eyes/lips etc are some of the most delicate areas, and having a burning lump stuck to my head is not my idea of fun.......

I'll say what I always say when the helmet debate comes up; buy the best you can, I'm personally more concerned about the helmets ability to save my life rather than the ability of it to save me £100 when I buy it.....

I have a bike helmet and even though it was cheep ishe I am happy that it is good. However, I do wear a fire proof balaclave with it, making it perfect.

Hi,
Realistically your helmet isn't as important in a car as it is on a bike. In a car you've got the car protecting you to a certain degree, on a bike you've only got fresh air!

Gavin :)

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

I ended up with a OMP "speed" one. its a really nice helmet, comfortable and fairly cheap off ebay. Snell approved too.

On a track I think bike & car are equally dangerous...bike you skate down the road, car you have roll cage etc that can batter you
