Hi all, I'm a newbie to the site and looking at the previous posts seems to be confusing me more. I like the idea of keeping my 998 for the following reasons;

I know its in good condition (unlike a 1275 from ebay)
It only has 45000 miles
I like the idea of tuning it and embarrassing more exotic machinery. The thought of beating chavs at the lights with a mini 1000 badge on the back is very tempting!

I'd like to go down the route of supercharging my 998. My questions are;

What sort of power should I expect to really enjoy the car and keep reliability?
How often would the engine need rebuilding?
What sort of spec of engine would I need for a nice quick car? I don't mind changing the cam/head etc, but don't have a clue where to start.

I'm aware that there will be varying opinions, but any comments advice would be much appreciated.

It's all a balancing act, power vs reliability vs cost, you can have any two, but you can't have all three. I would have thought a 998 supercharger would easily make power levels in excess of 100 bananas, I know I would be very disappointed if the 1 litre turbo lump that I am planning for the hill climber I'm builder is not making a fair bit more.

As above, depends on how much power it makes, how hard it's driven & what components are used.

Depends what you call quick?

Search & read around, start with the entire beginners tech section & then go onto the how to section.

Now I am hoping by writing this somebody will come along and point out I know nothing about supercharging a 998 (big bore iron snail worshiper here) but at leat that will help you ...

I am struggling to think of a supercharger that will provide a reasonable blend of efficencey and reasonable boost for a 998cc lump ......

discuss ..... lol

The first person I am expect to shoot me down is Axel .... you could do a whole load worse than search for supercharger (in post text) by Axel ..... you may find a few answers.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

I thought about a supercharged 998 for a while, but a turbo seemed to make more sense:

I've ran out of bullets this weekend!

The Eaton M45 is fine for a 998. Depends on exact boost requirements, but it would not be worth spending out on enything else - in my opinion.

How about an AMR300 or AMR500 (from a Subaru Rex (not WRX) and Vivio) or an SC12 from Toyota?

They're really cheap (~$250AUD or something like £100) and apparently they work really well!

There's guys here in Aus making kits to fit an SC12 to the A-series.. everything you need apart from the supercharger itself, and from memory they make around 10psi on a smallbore.. *happy*

Personally, I think turbocharging will be easier and give better results for a road car. However, should you wish to supercharge the by all means try it.

I've had a look at the BMW Mini, Eaton M45 supercharger curves and done some calcs.

Suprisingly, it is ideal at moderate boost of say 5-7psi, but efficiency falls off above that.

At a reasonable maximum of 12 psi boost and an intercooler, you should be looking at around 120hp. The blower efficiency is not great but OK. Interestingly without the intercooler you get around 100hp.

With an intercooler you will need to go blow-thru and have some sort off supercharger bypass for low throttle openings.

I like the look of those other blowers, but I'm not sure of the availability in the UK. At least unused M45s are readily available on ebay for around £150-200.

Hey my car! (The red one).

Some people using the kit on my car are seeing 12+psi on a 998. I'm getting 6-7psi, but mines 1330cc, so boost is less than a 998 would see.

I also have a sc12 kit, mines hits about 10psi on a metro motor

this is a pretty cheap way to get boosted and awesome fun to drive, it actually forces you back in the seat from takeoff!!

Yeah cheap to get boosted for sure.

And yes, it does throw you back in the seat in first gear take off. Especially with sticky tyres!

the toyota sc-12is good for 12psi max, this is why the mr2 guys swap em out for turbs.
the kit doesnt include a carburettor or the s/c
depending on your motor it runs about 6-7psi standard.

hello there crazy1275, is that a standard 1275 metro engine or was that a turbo engine? and it looks like the outlet of the supercharger blows in that alluminium plenum? or is it connected with the HIF44 turbo? thanks
