Hi all, My rear brakes were non existent in the MOT on my sprite im doing for the missus, ive just changed the rear cylinders and bled the system, however the rears will not lock up even if i stamp on the pedal and it is servo assisted!! Ive adjusted them too so they are near enough binding and the handbrake locks them up fine!

any clues? as i need to get it in for a re-mot before the weekend!

Hi,
What reading do you get at the MOT station, is it lierally zero?
THe only things I can think of are the pressure regulating valve on the bulkhead, or the master cylinder. You'd have to be really unlucky to get two collapsed flexy hoses....
The rears won't lock on the brake tester, ever. If the reading is low try leaving a nice heavy tool box in the boot *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Working up the BHP ladder.

If the pedal feels good, i'd look at the pressure regulator on the bulkhead as Gavin suggested. Mine was nothing but trouble and didnt stay on there very long.

Good luck

I like nice quiet girly Minis

I 3rd that, most likely that valve.

I'd not be happy sending Candice out in a Mini without one fitted though so replace it. I'm sure you care as much for your missus as I do Candice...

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

cheers lads, the front lock up fine and ive adjusted and bled the rears so that they do work but i can still physically move the rear wheels, as ive been told the rears shouldnt lock up, has anyone got a link to what type of bias controller i should fit.

As you say roger its not worth risking life or limb with these things!!

Do you have the later type master cylinder or 2 dash pots?

Working up the BHP ladder.

This is a link to the one i have fitted

I think there was one floating about on TM a little while back. If your running dual line you'll need to do some playing about, link the front brakes straight throught and add the proportioning valve to the rear.

Or just replace the original, but personal i hate em *wink*

stoke-on-trent

i was looking at these earlier on, but i am running the same system as pickmeup. the one thing i wondered was if it takes one line to two or just a single line output.

cheers

Give the compensator valve on the bulkhead a twat with a hammer see if that shifts it and they start working. If you pump the pedal too vigourously (Nic, NO.) when bleeding the system it can cause the shuttle valve to stick over to one side and blank off the ports to the rear brakes.

Stefaz, they are single line in and single line out buddy.

Thats exactly what happened with my old valve Tom. However, it was impossible to bleed fluid through. I then removed it, and twated it with a hammer numerous times *laughing*

ive been mucking about with it again! i noticed that i hadnt the brake shoes on correctly ie both in the same orientation, so fixed that and i though i had cured the problem, the hole system bled very easily and the fluid was clean, now can someone tell me should the rear brakes lock?? they do work now but i can still turn the wheels with a bit of force!

Hi,
No I don't think they'll lock.
Best bet is to get it brake tested.
Does the handbrake lock the wheels?
If you've fitted new shoes they need some bedding in before you'll get the best out of them too.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

you will probably be able to 'just' move the wheels with the brakes on. not much braking power should be going to the rear end of a mini.

i can move them with a bit of force, i may take it back to the station and stick it on the brake tester before i cahnge the bias valve over
