stowmaket suffolk

well done about 450 miles now in the all new 1310 turbo engine, currently using coma 20/50 spi rated se oil.

being driving normaly with the odd half throttle burst to 3500 rpm at 7psi.

but waht i was wondering every one runs the engine into to i used to do about 1500 before using top quality semi oil. i think now thats a bit much realy and will proberly do aboput 1000 miles before using some millers cvt.

how ever when running in to this distance i have nevber had issues with cracked rings ect weres i know peeps who have done less have had in the past issues with cracked rings ect so what do you all think.

always looking for them bigger bunches of bannanas

i ran my engine upto 3000rpm for the first few hundred miles then 3500-4000rpm untill 1000miles. After that it went straight to the RR without hitch. I used unipart green/duckhams throughout.

I've seen the future and tbh its Pie

glad your getting there mate. I would stick with what you are doing, i know it takes a long time, but like you say you never then have problems.

Hi,
I wouldn't put anything remotely synthetic in before 1500 miles.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

TBH I would have thought that by 1000 miles you must be more then run in and ready for some good oil. But running in is a funny thing as we all know, we all do different things, and we have to do what we know and find works.

I did 300 miles before hitting the rollers, I then did 10k without a single engine related problem. Several gearboxes later I split the engine for the first time a couple of months ago and it was all as good as gold.

Most of those miles were done with Castrol R4 superbike oil and frequently revving past 8k.

where the hell am i gonna do that in malta?? *surprised* *frown*

do you guys run your engines in using whatever boost is planned at the end or do you use a lower figure?
to put it another way to you run in using 15psi or maybe 7 or 8psi?

Are yes good point, i know many people on here don't go near the 1000 miles mark, so don't panic *wink*:)

well i don't use any boost untill over around 300 miles, and then build up from there over many miles. And i only give it the biggen on the rolling road at full boost once covered around the 1000 + miles.

You've got it easy, I'm still trying to work out how to run in the hill climber, I don't think I'll be very competitive if I have to keep it under 3k for the first 1000 miles.

For a race engine a couple of 20min bursts to bed the cam in in the garage, then a 20min run on the rollers at mid speed/mid load, then go for it.....at the end of the day it won't really do enough miles before a rebuild to worry about it too much.

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

Yup, mine was a cam bed in, then a few bits and bobs before hitting the rollers hard!

I'll tell you how long it lasts...

I'm pretty sure though that it will get a rebuild before it has any problems with the amount of power that goes through most of our engines.

All depends. if it was a road car that i wanted to do a good 10-20k in before pulling it apart i would of been a lot more careful.

yes i think that is the hole issue, if its a race car or a road car that you want to last as long as possible.

I'll be giving you another report on NOT running it in... I just can't seem to stay off the throttle --its way too much fun!!.. I have about 100 miles on it and all I am doing is limiting rpm to 5000 for now... damn the consequences, its not a daily driver.

Good point about race engines. This time round I'm running it in on the dyno, it'll get about half an hour on a light to medium load varying between 2k to 3k rpm.

Once thats done it'll be mapped. Running in on Millers running in oil this time, after the half hours up i'll fill it with bike oil again.

As my cams aren't new i'm only bedding the rings in.

leeds/wakefield.

i know a F2 pinto engine builder that runs them for 5 hrs at light varing loads , then tunes them,
and i once spoke to a fella that gave his pinto engines 50 miles then went rallying.
i personally give my engines between 2 to 2 1/2 hrs at fast idle [2500] to knock the edges off,
unfortunatly 3 years ago knocking the edges off was a very real and expensive experience.

Most modern cars take alot longer to run in, spoke to a guy at work he claims his 2ltr vw tdi engine has just loosened up around 10k, quotes faster & better fuel economy, an old mini engine should be different tho, Have been told to run in for approx 2k and an oil change after first 500 miles

Rob .... we'll run that in at Combe!!! Short bursts at high load (note I say load .... not scream it's arse off), then low, then high, then low etc. There was a thread on this a couple of weeks back.

What your trying to do is bed the rings down and settle the cam followers, the rest can cope!

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

Yeah wasn't there a thread on here a while ago with a link to a site saying give it serious stick after 20 miles to bed in the rings? Sound like the most fun way of doing it anyway!
