Hi guys, a friend of mine bought a shell a while back with a tax exempt log book.

The shell was screwed though so he scrapped it, and bought a used mk3 shell, pretty much the same as the one he scrapped as it was a late 72 shell (cut off being dec 73 apparently).

He kept the VIN plate from the old shell and has re fitted this to the new shell. He's built up the car with various new and used parts and has just mot'd it.

Hes now unsure what to do next as has never owned a tax exempt car!

Any help would be appreciated.

Rich

aye the Nee Nars might find out and pay a visit...one word would sum up his car "Ringer" he should have kept the original shell, transfered everything over to the doner shell, then informed the DVLA who would come out (or he would have had to take both to the local office) and check the original shell and the donor to make sure it was all above board, once they give the nod he could then dispose of the old body. basically and not to stereo type here, it would appear to me he has bought a shagged mini to get the tax exempt plates from it ! he has then taken the real ID off the good mini, perhaps drilled out the scuttle (coz if he didnt he would come a cropper real quick) and put the new tax exempt vins on....................just a random scenario of what he may have done......or what i would have suspected if i was mr plod or mr DVLA paying a visit.

hypothetically tell him not to say a word to anyone!
I think legally you can only change shells with a brand new shell. Then has to be inspected. Maybe wrong on this.

Not really sure what you mean by that. Was just trying to help a friend out as he wasnt sure.

He did actually buy the car hoping to do it up and the tax exempt was a bonus. Turns out it wasnt what he expected so bought another cheap shell.

If you dont know about these things then i guess it was a mistake that he scrapped his shell after all the prepping hed done to it!

Ill get him to ring the DVLA anyway. Thanks for the help

Hi,
The problem you've got is the fact you only started with a shell.
I think if you start with a whole car and transfer all the running gear to another shell you may get away with that...

when he scrapped the shell he should have sent the corresponding logbook off to DVLA saying that he has scrapped the car. he hasnt so has already broken the law.

he cant trasfer the logbook to a new shell as thats ringing.

if the logbook is marked "historic vehicle" then he could hypotheticaly put the reg and chassis number on the other mini and claim his free tax, this is what a lot of people do and they seem to get away with it BUT its ILLEGAL.

if the logbook isnt marked "historical vehicle" then as richie says a DVLA inspection will be needed to qualify for free tax

no longer a series, but still 1.3 turbo.

hypothetically speaking....Could you Mot the car on the old plate, then "transfer" the number plate onto the later shell, with the new VIN no. etc?

It wouldn't be Tax exempt but for the sake of a 100 odd quid a year it wouldn't be worth the risk, at least you'll have an old plate! :)

EDIT: Anyone know the reason why a car has to have an MOT to transfer the plate over, seems a bit pointless to me?

To answer the only question asked and not expressing my opinion about reshelling. Taxing a tax exempt car is the same as taxing any other car. You just don't pay. Go to the post office get the form, fill it in, tick the rlavent boxes, hand it in with your MOT and insurence bits of paper and bob's your knob.

Matty, the reason the donar car has to be MOT'd for the reg to be transferable is that if not people would be buying any old bits of scrap and transfering desirable numbers all over the palce.

This would cause two porblems;

1) keeping track of what was happening to what cars when and where. A nightmare for the DVLA. If it has to be MOT'd then the car still obviously exists (I know there are ways round this but the DVLA assume they are dealing with law abiding people). If the car exists then the second part of the process can happen easily, issuing a reg number to the donor car so it can be maintained on the DVLA's records.

2) With the current regulations the vehicle has to be "registered" to somebody for it to recieve an MOT. This means that people can't tansfer the reg from a random barn find which, in all reality, doesn't belong to them.

As an aside I'd really not be putting this sort of stuff on an open forum .....

You never know there may be coppers on this forum ... hey Richie!!!!!!! In all honesty it is about as bright as robbing a bank and then stopping off at the cafe down the street for a cup of tea whilst you wait for the bus!!!!!!!!

I am totally against this sort of behaviour. I understand why people do it but I'd prefer the challange of doing it legally.

One of my kit cars a few years back was incorrectly registered. A lot of people would have done a log book swap, try a bit of slight of hand or similar but in reality it is as simple as taking the car to the local DVLA office, getting it checked over and a couple of forms!

One of my old Minis was also reshelled (new Rover shell) and again all I had to do was take the documents for the donor, the purchase reciept for the shell and the rebuilt car to the DVLA offices and within 30 minutes I had everything sorted ... a rebuilt 1971 Mini using a new shell.

Rich, remember buddy if the copper did ask, Ignorance is not a defence in the eyes of the law *wink* make sure ure *wink* friend *wink* makes sure he is kosher, if you ask he DVLA they will be open and honest with you, as long as you are with them ! my turbo is on a 64 "B" and the shell is on permenant export i had to ring DVLNI up and enquire about its "Kosherness" but is has transpired it is all above board even with the SABTVRO number ? they were really really helpfull, just tactfully lay ure cards on the table so to speak (without ure *wink*friend*wink* incriminating himself
