hi

iv been searching but i couldnt find what i was looking for.

basicly iv been thinking about having my turbo mini (once its done) to have 13" wheels so i can use a decent tyre and brake set up (metro turbo 4 pots).

but i do like the way my mini handles on 10x6 wheels (apart from the brakes). but iv heard that you can get 13s to work just as well or better than 10s!?

what suspension set up should i get it set up as a starting point?

it will be a road going mini but only for weekends and the odd trackday. it will mainly be driven in anger!! lol

cheers

Josh, the following will put you in the ball park and from there its a matter of personal preferences.

Front

castor 5.5 to 6deg castor
camber -1 to -1,5 deg (real not just fixed neg arms of that nominal value)
standard toe out setting

ride height set so drive shafts level with you in the car and full of fluids (the car that is .... don'r set up geometry whilst needing a pee...LOL)

Rear

std toe in setting
camber 0 to -0.5 deg
ride height about 20mm higher than the front

Try not to run the car too stiff, the lower profile tyres have less give than the 70s on 10" wheels and will make the car feel skitish if you set it too stiff ..... you will appreciate the extra front end bite you get anyway!!!

Fit the slightly longer tierod ends as you might find with the car at that heigh the standard ones are a little marginal to say the least. Good quality bushes are worth every penny. Make sure also that you have the best quality and best set up swivels or else you will be chasing them forever. The extra loads you can generate with 13s will bed the swivels in really fast. Check them after a couple of hundred miles and reset as required and all will be well for a long time if you have bought decent ones.

Wheels should be 13x6 with between an ET19 and ET22 offset.
Tyres are very important. Generally square edged tyres (such as the perelli) are to be avoided as they give no progression as the car rolls.

The mety turbo 4 pots are good calipers but a little heavy. With the money you have invested under the bonnet it might be worth saving up for some ally 4pots.

Every day is a school day ...........

How fast and how expensive ...... the same question...

cheers roger!! aperciated

looking at the 13" wheels do you think i would get away with 13x7? as i think they look much better, or will it compleatly fook up the handling of the car?
looking at the ultralite extrem split rims (13x7)

also with the brakes what alloy calipers would you recomend? is there alot of differnce between metro 4 pots and alloy 4 pots? (apart from the wight differnce)?

I don't think 7" wheels are a good idea at all for two reasons.

1) Your not going to be able to get the anywhere near the righ offset and that will make the car feel twitchy and apart from the increase in torque steer it will follow any imperfections in the road and be a general handful.

2) They will stretch the tire to the point you will have no movement left in the sidewall and thus quite apart from the stiff ride (have any fillings ... want to keep them?) it will make the car feel really nervious around the centre point on the steering, especially when going though S bends etc.

I now people like the look but I'd rather have the car handle than look good standing still. Ask robert how much of an improvement he made by effectively changing the offset on his wheels, has to be the ultimate back to back comparison ... all the same everything just cut back to where he wanted it!

There are a few wheels out there that look deep dish when they aren't really.

As for the brakes there is no benefit apart from the reduction in unsprung weight as most of the ally 4 pots use Mety pads and pistons. It's an expensive solution but you could always consider radial mount calipers and bell mounted discs upto about 9.5" dia discs ..... if you want to stop quick then that is your best bet. The improvement in laps times that come from bigger brakes is worth a fair few curleywhirlies on the other exit to the corner .... great for nipping past all the big heavy stuff on trackdays!!!

Wilwood calipers will work out cheaper than most of the Mini specific 4 pots and have a wide range of pads available. Only people I know who make the bells for the Mini are MRA but to be fair there isn't that much too them!!!
TurboHarry has made some really nice ones for his car. I could make you some (although not quickly) as no doubt could fastcarl.

ok so what 6x13 wheels should i go for? are the superlite ones any good?
i like the look of the deep dish wheels realy, and i might have to sacrifice handling for looks im afraid as those wheels i was thinking of would look the absolute dogs on my mini!
