didnt think they had any difference in braking power over finned drums - just the weight - really worth 450 notes?

KAD do them and just reading their blurb they have changed them so they are now suitable for the road. I hink the addition of dust seals and a handbrake have helped.

As Stefaz says the rear drums on a mini are perfectly adequate and disks are really only for saving weight.

the mini drums are indeed well up to the job.

one of the main reasons i would do it though is to get rid of the need for adjusting drums. a little more maintainance free

on another note do we have any idea of what the wear is like on the rear disk jobbies - since they were designed for racing and not for road use how long would they even last? i imagine repalcement parts being pricey

Hi,
I think the discs would rot away before you'd wear the pads out !

I briefly remember someone using bike brakes on the rear, could be worth a look.

Rear disc brake conversion here:
http://www.16vmini.co.uk/projects.php3?projectid=1
Ford granada/sierra 4x4 rear calipers. Says there they actually increase the unsprung weight- so just for the show *happy*
Personally I reckon a good prospect would be looking at the new hondas etc. with rear discs... main prob would be the PCD of the studs i'd imagine *oh well*

thats where i seen it badger about 5 yrs ago, top chap popping that up!

i spose the weight of the sierra pars doe'nt matter if the car is built for a purpose & needs the disks on the back! or if you want to have rear disks for minimum maintainance/looks

Also another conversion possibility is mk5 polo GTI setup as they run alloy calipers also if i remember rightly the mk4 golf does too..... *wink* mk2 golf items are the same setup but are prone to siezing and are cast.

From doing abit of research a large alloy block is machined with steel inserts that will bolt to the radius arm and the golf/polo caliper carrier and stub axle to the other side of the alloy block and the disk goes on that. This eans 4x100 disks then too so with wobble bolts mini wheels WILL fit *wink*

EDIT: talk about bumping an old post! sorry guys, shows the search function works *tongue*

Unsure how good KADs steel disks are but my meonite 5mm disks are perfectly fine after 5 years - still 0 runout on them

I seriously doubt it!

How much weight is there to be lost by using the kad kit over a lightweight drum set up, e.g. minifin, alloy hub etc?

Also is there anywhere else weight could be lost from a drum set up? Its just £700 for the kad kit is quite a lot.

how easy would it be to modify a set of brake calipers to have a handbrake?

I was hoping to put a set of tarox 10" calipers on the back as well as the front *tongue*

Quite a lot with a rear beam and alloy radius arms! Id say 20kg +

Interesting to see what Madmk1 weight saving is with his new set up.
