Yours from the Funny Farm

will having a fan shroud make a big difference to the cooling ability of the standard (read crappy) plastic fan?

got a bone stock NA 1100 motor( still going strong at 40 yrs young!!) and it seems to get pretty warm after not much time.ok so it was 35 + degrees but still.
not 100% sure the temp gauge is working properly but after a couple short runs and some idling i removed the rad cap and a good amount of water bubbled out quite fast

cheers
tom

Well don't remove the rad cap when it is hot and under pressure, it will throw water out.

i know i shouldnt do that but i wanted to be sure ya see
and i thought the amount of water was disproportionate to the time it had been running

Once the thermostat has opened it will throw out a load of coolant.

Yes the fan shroud will make a big difference, That's why it's there. Plus the rubber strips between the rad and inner wing are important as well.

Sounds silly but, what does the temp gauge say?

My car always seems hot under the bonnet, but the temp gauge never goes over the halfway point.

Yours from the Funny Farm

thats the prob lizard
the gauge reads 50-80-100-120 and i ve never had it anywhere near the 80 bit
but when you switch off the ignition the needle goes right past the 50 and disappears behing the black bit at the top which has the sign for water temp on it and whatnot
therefore im not sure the gauge is accurate cos im afraid that if the bit with the numbers marked on it has moved or something then it could be misreading

not sure how to check it either

Hi,
To elaborate on AL's question a bit ....
If you've got the old smiths type guages the power for the gauge should not come direct from the igintion but through a vlotage stabiliser/ regulator.
This unit lowers the voltage to the gauges to about 8volts, and is usually a small metal box with 5 terminals on it.
I'd go with the test it in boiling water then you'll know for sure it's reading right.
Cheers,
Gavin :)
