I bought a brand new Renault 5 T2 off eBay a month or 2 ago. It came in a garrett box and had not seen an engine before. It looked brand new so i packed it away in its box again until my manifold was machined to take it. Finally got my adaptor plate made and trial fitted it all yesterday. I noticed that the shaft has play in it. It has no movment backwards and forwardsbut has a fair bit of play up and down although does not touch the sides of the housing.

I showed it to a mechanic mate and he said he heard of people on eBay selling brand new turbos which manufacturers had found to be outwith tolerances and which are basically junk! Anyone else heard of this? and should the turbo be solid up, down and backwards and forwards?

Im hoping i have not wasted a lot of money on scrap metal.

Thanks for looking

Daniel

it's normal to have some play for a dry turbo, prime it with some camshaft red stuf and it'll have no play and will be safe for the first engine start

would running compressed air through the exhaust inlet of damaged it at all?

I only ran it for about 3 seconds to see it spin up and make sure it went ok.

Get a DTI and a mag stand and measure the float, you should be able to look up what is acceptable radial and axial float, for example the metro haynes gives the tolerances for the T3.

If its in spec it OK, if its out of spec throw it back at the ebay seller.

my dial gauge wouldnt reach into the T2 oil hole to measure the radial movement so i used feeler gauges between the rotors and casing and found its difference when moved up and down.

axial end float was measured at basically zero and using feeler gauges (which i know is not an ideal method of testing) get about .25mm play.

I will try find a local turbo specialist and get their opinion just to be on the safe side though as last thing i want is a faulty turbo once its all plumbed in.

Thanks for the replies

Daniel

phew panic averted, thanks for the replies.

Now its just back to panicing about getting the connections for oil and water right and how long my built up block can sit until it gets too contaminated with airborn dust etc as i patiently wait for my Morspeed gearbox which i paid for 3 months ago and was told a month ago was ready to post!!!

Pack the block up in plastic sacks and seal with tank tape, that way it will be fine and last as long as necessary.

yeah well it took 11 months for him to prepare my block, pistons, crank etc... so he said he would give me a discount on the box which i also thought would mean i would get it quickly but 3 months on i am still waiting!!!
Minimag have just showed interest in my mini so i think they'll be getting told about his lead times.

I've now heard pretty much the same story independantly from 3 different people.

Doesn't give out a very good reputation TBH.
