Won a 1996 volvo t5 last week on ebay from, collected it last weekend and had a bit of a mare on the way back home from Stevenage, it decided to drop all its oil on the A6 at about a ton, stopped straight away and sorted it, turned out it was pouring form the turbo return...great!

Anyway gave it a general service the next day, oil change etc and it seems that i have got away with it thankfully! Hardly any bits of metal in the oil, the turbo seems to sound ok and it doesnt half shift.

After browsing a few T5 forums it seems that these things run 9.5 psi as std, now when i fitted a spare boost gauge tonight, the most it would boost to is about 6psi at a push.

I did the soapy water method all around the intercooler and boost pipe joints, but they all seem to be sealing ok...? Ive renewed all the hosing running round the actuator, dump valve, boost gauge etc with brand new silicon tube, so thats all good....

This being my first experience with a turbo car (haha only been a member on here for about 5 years!) is a low boost reading normal (bearing in mind the cars done 160k and had a near death experience a few days ago....)?

Ive added a bleed valve and tweaked it back to 10psi, but when it comes on boost, it roars all the way, hits 10psi then settles back down to about 6 or 7 again. Is this 'spike' normal? or should it hold a steady 10 if thats what ive set it to?

I should probably know the answer to most of these question, but ive had a long pissy day and my heads pickled.

Any advice, light shed will, as always be gratefully accepted.

Thanks

Joe

hi there joey buddy, nice write up *smiley*

Maybe be!............. thats all the actuator will see low pressure
as the spring will... may be weak!

are you sure you have the bleed valve plumbed in right ??

the spike denotes a weak spring in the actuator &.......... maybe your plumbing ?

hope other peeps will comment

Hi,
I'd go with Benross, weak spring in the actuator.
Bleed valve won't do much.
Try shortening the acutator rod a turn or two, if that brings the boost up get another actuator.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

doesn't it have a electronic boost controller with solenoid valves?
at this milage , the fuel pump generally can't give enough fuell, making lean mixture, prone to pink then ecu lower boost because it does hear knocking.
so as with eggs carefull.

it was my plumbing steve

sorted now, i had put the bleed valve between the std boost controller valve and actuator.

Now ive completely cut the std controller out so its not interferring and plumbed the bleed valve directly between the turbo and actuator, it holds dead on 10psi now.

and its quick...! :)

Cheers guys

Everyone loves a volv. A friend took me out in his ex police T5 850 estate (he says pushing out 300 bhp ish) the other day while i was back at uni. Lets just say i wasnt aware a brick could do that, absolutely loved it. Im getting rid of the 240 soon and then its 340/360 time. When ive grown up a bit its gotta be a t5 for me

Btw what did you pay for it joeybaby?

mate if you want info on T5's go to www.vpcuk.org (volvo performance club uk) where the boost pipe meets the turbo there is a spring clip which rots and weeps, it will eventually snap check there. my volvo is ballistic 2.3 20v turbo T5 does 155 mph then i ran out of runway (was still accelerating too) makes me laugh when wank splashes pull up next to you in their scoobies, i own them from 60mph up over and they dont really pull away in the bottom end *wink*

the vpcuk forum will have dedicated threads on this very topic !

£750! and i just cant believe how much car for the money, full electrics/leather etc

It does have a few niggles though, the ABS module is dead, and has a warped front disc, the guy threw in a full set of discs and pads, a new ignition module and turbo oil return seal/gasket (which was fortunate when it let go on the way back)

Richie, been on there and everyone seems to rave about those budget rica chips, look very good value, but ill stick with the £10 bleed valve for now :)

One thing I was dissapointed with, and I know i have no one to blame but myself, but when fixing the turbo leak on the way home i realised it was fwd, WHY!!??

Oh well.

how strange! yeah, well the v70 awd... my old man went and bought one today after having a drive in mine earlier in the week

Its a 2.5L though but seems no where near as quick as mine was, after a browse on vpcuk it seems they use a different turbo which isnt quite as hot...still a cracking motor though.

You raced, but he obviously didn't.

However 6mpg? I think you've managed quite well *wink*

No way.

Look at this, would your 306 deal with this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volvo_850

T-5 (Turbo) B5234T 2.3L 2319cc I5 20v Turbo Yes (Mitsubishi TD04-15g) Bosch LH-Jetronic 222 hp (166 kW)@5200 rpm 300 N·m @2000 rpm M56 5 speed manual/ 4 speed adaptive automatic 0-100 km/h: 7.3s, VMax: 229 km/h(142 mph)

And, the Fortè of the car is definately not 0-62, its 40 to 100.

So, was your PUG a Mi16 conversion?

I'd have thought they'd be pretty even really, Volvo is 220bhp but maybe 1600-?-kg, Peugeot is 170bhp but only 1050kg. So the Peugeot is up on power-to-weight, but the Volvo will pull some of that back with its torque delivery.

absolutly nothing in it till 130mph then the torque of the volvo took over, the 306 ran out of puff at 140 and the volvo goes on to 150mph

I think everyone is missing the point though, can you fit a wardrobe in the back of a 306? does it have heated lazyboy-esque armchairs for front seats?

...nope :)
