hi

im going to rebuild a mg metro engine as the main bearings have gone and the gearbox is nackerd.

im going to fit a sportyer cam in it to give it a bit more power, also while its in bits its rude not to! lol

i was thinking of putting a 286 cam in it, anyone with experiance of these cams? what are they like to live with everyday traffic etc?

also what power should i expect to see from it? the spec is:

na mg metro block and crank,
mg metro head,
hif44,
286 cam,
3.44:1 fd,
cental oil pick up pipe.

any other little mods to do while its in bits?

cheers

DON'T I repeat DO NOT put a 286 cam in, it will make it an absolute pig to drive in traffic, I did this a good few years ago to my road car and quickly regretted it, a 276 will produde the goods and still be tractable from lower down and easy to drive in traffic.

Actually I do not think the 286 is too bad. Although the engine I have tried with it was a 1400, but that was VERY civilised!

But I may be a bit special.... I am driving my 1191 cc engine with a miglia cam on the roads too... I find it a little bit exhausting on long drives though

sw5 or slightly more racey but not by alot at all the kent 246 (i think thats the number) is good for a daily, i heard the 246 was the starting point for the sw5 but the sw5 is a toned down version, if you get my meanings :)

my dad had a 276 in a single point inj cooper, that was pretty good

depends a lil on ya drivin style too i reckon! if yur a bit wreckless & rev the nuts off ya car then a lairy cam will work ok, if your mechanicly sympathetic as a driver go for the least lumpy for a daily driver

xcuse my spellin *happy*

the way i see it when you pull away normaly and driving along you well i dont go below 2000rpm, so a 286 should be ok i would of thought.

what about roller rockers or is there not much point on a daily driver?

what sort of power should i expect to see from my pland spec do you think?

ported or std head? If standard it will be a major restriction.

I am the wrong guy to answer that as I am not in UK, but with that spec and a decent head I would say around 85-95 flywheel HP.

Hi,
A 286 in a 1380 isn't too bad, in fact with mapped ignition, it's ace!
However in a 1275, you'll end up with quite a cammy motor!
It's amazing how a few cc can make such a difference...
Here's my 1380 dyno graph, take a look at the torque @1500RPM *wink*
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Well why bother asking for advice from people who have done it if you are not going to listen to it?
I have fitted a 286 to a 1275, it made it an absolute fucking pig, would not idle at all, would not take full throttle below 2000rpm without falling flat on its face, it actually made less power than the standard cam up to about 4000rpm.
However if you are determined to still use a 286 go ahead then I can have a good laugh at you when you discover the same as I did.

If its just a run about car, I would leave it as it is with std cam. Spend the money on your tweaked turbo mini instead. Jeez! sounded old & wise then! :(

if its just a run around I would keep standard or stick a SW5 in it. I would not put a 286 in an everyday runner either. but for more of a funny car that can be used when you WANT I would do it.

276 it is then!

sorry tom i was just reading what it says on minispares site and my mate had one in his 1380 which seemed ok. but as its been said above the extra CCs of the 1380 makes the differnce.

the only reason im changing the cam is because its all coming apart anyway as i need to rebuild it. also iv heard the mg metro cam is good to use in 998s? which could be good as my sis might want me to fit it to hers at some point.

thanks for the advice fellas,

cheers

i heard the std metty cam is actually very good. If its still in good condition i'd save some cash and refit.
