driving home last night, the oil warning light came on. Stopped, checked levels - topped up a bit to be on the safe side. Carried on and it came back on again.

left it over night, left house this morning and all was fine for about 2 minutes then it came back on again. Switched engine off and back on and it went off again. All ok for another 40 miles or so then the same thing again. I've checked the oil level and it is bang on full. I've also checked the book and it states the warning is for low oil level as it shows a separate warning for low pressure.

It happened before a few times and topping up the level usually cleared it but not this time. Anyone else had a similar problem? I'm thinking the sensor is at fault or a dodgy connection somewhere.

I'm going to be towing down to Avon so want to get it sorted pronto

Car is the V6 diesel.

cheers again

rob

sounds like a dodgy switch to me. Get vag-com on it, that will tell you for sure.

Cheers guys.

I spoke to an Audi 'tecnician' who suggested the same. First port of call is to remove the sensor and clean it and the connections.

I've got the DIS display - all is does is flash a big red oil can at me with lots of bleeping!

Went to URO for some oil and a filter - thought it wise to change it while I was at it - £73 for oil!!

Ah, mine did that to me once, I thought it was oil pressure not level, so turned it off immediately!

Thinking about it I had just hurled it round a roundabout so the oil must have gone to the other side of the sump.

well took out the sensor last night and cleaned it up a bit. The wiring is caked in oil from a leak from the rocker cover so have cleaned that up as well.

The undertray is absolutely knackered and I'm just wondering if it was a bit of dampness in the connection.

Anyhow - all seems well now

Rob

Ahhh, rocker covers leaking oil, been there done that, heres a tip, get the gaskets from Audi, they are cheaper than the motorfactors were.
Also glue the fuckers on with plenty of silicone, and also make sure that your crank breather isn't blocked, in actual fact the Audi manual recommends the breather filter is replaced if any oil leaks are evident. Mine still leaked from the rocker cover even after a new seal, the crankcase pressure from the blocked filter was pushing oil "uphill" and out!

cheers Tom.

I was aware of the leak after the last service but Audi wanted over £300 to fix it, along with a whole load of other items them wanted to fix......£49 to replace a brake bulb being one of them!

I've never really worked on a diesle before other than oil and filter changes and the odd set of glow plugs. Howe easly is it to get the covers off?

Whilst saying the oil switch is faulty....it might be wise to actually check you have oil pressure !!!!
Usually if its low enough for the light to be on....your engine is in severe danger.

Most switches turn off around 7psi anyway, so the switch might be working and you do have a problem !

I read on one of the TDI forums, that there is some crankcase breather in the V6TDI's that needs replaced now and again.
If its blocked, it will cause excessive pressure in there that wont help with leaks.

I used to own a 525tds, and one day the oil light came on...
i thought it strange, and did actually switch off the engine.
Turned out, the oil pump on these is driven by the front pulley clamping the drive when the bolt is tight.

My bolt had worked loose somehow, and hence no drive. Only discovered this after stripping the front of the engine to replace the pump.

He writes above that there is a different light for low oil pressure, the light that has come on was only for low level

Stevie is spot on with the crankcase breather filter issue, there is a thread by me about this only the other day, my car started smoking terribly, a new breather filter at £40 cured it and also the oil leaks it has are much reduced (although not gone).

The rocker cover gaskets are a bit awkward to do but not difficult. It depends which side it is, the drivers side one is a lot easier than the passenger side one. They cost me £32 for EACH gasket so I had to buy two to do both sides......

Cheers guys. I think I'll change the breather out of courtesy anyway.

BTW, both covers are leaking but the passenger side one is the one picked up in the service. Drivers side is just a bit damp

Hi,
I thought a rocker cover gasket for a Cossie was steep @£28, but at least I only need one!
Cheers,
Gavin :)
