Trying to get my car started today, and the dizzy has a spade head coming out of it and i wasn't sure if it was + or - anyway tryed on both on the coil and when it went on the + it started to smoke. i was wondering how you can tell if its broke? Couldn't geta spark before so not sure any ideas.

Hi,
All electrical things contain smoke, when the smoke escapes it's broke *wink*
You'll need to change the condenser and the points. Check the little earth wire inside the dizzy too.
That connection on the dizzy goes to the - side of the coil.
