I have nice fat white spark but alas I don't think I'm getting it at the right time. I have the VR sensor positioned at 8 o'clock the missing tooth is at TDC. I have some ball park values in the map but it won't start, it's slows rhythmically when I turn it over and it coughs out the carb. I have a series of questions/concerns as follows:

I take it the fact that I am getting good spark that my VR sensor is close enough to the trigger wheel and is getting a good signal?

I haven't tried running it on the EDIS only yet but when I get hold of my timing light tomorrow I will and see if I get the textbook 10 degrees. But I can assume the timing is quite out (over advanced?) then if it's backfiring out the carb?

My tacho on the MJ software doesn't move. The MAP gauge dances around under cranking but the tacho doesn't (well it flickered once). This made me think that the VR isn't picking up the signal well enough.

My battery is quite flat but it's getting jumped off another car. I guess this doesn't help.

I have my MAP sensor plumbed into the vac advance take off for the dizzy. I have read that this is not a good place for a signal but others use it? Anyone?

Can't wait till I get on top of this so I can drive it after 3 months! Thanks guys!

P.S. A thorough search was completed!

At a guess I'd say you're about 30 degrees retarded, as the VC sensor should be at 9 o'clock when the missing tooth is at TDC.

Ah right, I was looking at it the wrong way. I take it I can adjust for the VR position by adding 30 degrees to all the bins?

Thanks.

i dont think the rev counter on the software moves till you get over 400 rpm or something like that

Are your plug leads in the right order? or it could be down to the position of your sensor, as backfiring out of the carb indicates its wildly out on the timing

My map take off is from the old dizzy take off point on the carb too

I think if you get that timing right/sensor position you will be ok

Hi,
As above really, except I wouldn't use the vac advance port on the carb.
You won't get any vacuum at idle so the MJ will think the throttle is wide open.
This could make mapping difficult...
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Ah, that's what I wanted to hear. I don't think I'm getting near 400rpm under cranking with the flatish battery. That's that settled!

My bracket is like wil_h's bracket (in the pic), not quite 9 o'clock but almost. Can I compensate for sensor position with the software or should I remake a better braket? The coil pack is marked 1 2 3 4 and I have the leads plumbed in 1 to 1, 2 to 2 etc. But to me the coughing out the carb is more like lead mix up than the timing being out.

If my sensor is at 8ish rather than 9 would I be over advanced or retarded?

Thanks.

Hi,
Have you tried swapping the coil switching wires round? You may be firing the wrong coil...

Ah, don't panic. It's all sorted now. I put the lead from "1" on the coil pack to cylinder number 3 and vice versa, and the lead from "2" to number 4 and it fired straight up! Ticking over nice and smooth. Just fixing a few water leaks then I will start fine tuning my map. Thanks for all your help!

Hi,
Your coil switching leads are the wrong way round then.
Leave or change, the choice is yours *wink*
Don't forget to check the timing figure on the map to the actual on the engine.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Yeah your right! But when I wired it all up it was pretty easy as the coil pack and EDIS came with all the original wiring. When I wried the +ve and -ve for the coil pack I just went by the colour of the tails on the EDIS and matched that with the tails on the coil pack. It doesn't make sence but I don't care it works! Time for a quick spin!
