alright there,

got me rebuilt engine into me midas and got it runnin thanks to adive and imfo from you guys, had to rebuild the carb and fitted a new pressure reg which got it running,

i now have a problem with the fuel pressure, its startin off at 4psi at idle on start up and stayin there whilst drivin risin to bout 7/8 psi when the boost kicks in, given that its a rebuilt engine im not pullin more than 4000revs if that, but after a couple of minutes drivin it dies down to between 0 and 1 psi off boost and max of 5psi on boost and eventualy gets lower and lower til it cuts out on me, switch it off for a minute or so then every thing is fine again then the same happens again,

tried another fuel pump with same results, the old regulator, same, done the 'tee piece trick, still the same, tried a different module, no differance, its really startin to piss me off now!

when i installed it i used the standard feed pipe with a 10mm return, could the feed pipe be me problem?

any help on this would be great,

cheers, Gordon

Hi,
I'd think a restriction in the fuel supply to the pump (ie something getting sucked up) or insufficient breathing on the tank.
Does the sound of the pump change?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

mine has the same problem at the minute! i've had it before and can be caused by lot of things.

check all lines, pump and reg to see if they are working fine. just keep taking bits off and making sure its pumping plenty etc, then connect another bit up, etc etc

i had one pump that couldnt keep up at one point.

Didnt show up on the rollers as it wasnt held at full throttle long enough, showed up on teh road last night though.

im runnin a standard metro tank with a metro turbo pump mounted above the tank inside the car, tried another pump off a mates car and that was even worse.
bein a standard tank it didnt have a return so had to make one and dont remember seein a breather on it, so mite be that, goin to have another look tisnow,
could the feed pipe be to small as its only bout 6mm and been told today that there usualy 8mm, got enough pipe do do this, just dont want to waste me time if its no this if anyone has any experiance with this?
cheers, Gordon

Hi,
I think if you run a bigger feed, it's recommended that you reduce it to 6mm at the reg, so I wouldn't have thought it was a problem.
I'd be more inclined to think the standard metro pick up pipe was your problem, you need something like a 10mm pick up in the tank I would think?
Have you noticed a change in the pump noise when it happens, can you measure the current drawn by the pump?
Also you may have problems with the pupm being above the tank, by the side or below would be best.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

This is your problem, the pump must be below the bottom of the tank ideally, but essential to have it below the fuel level in the tank. Above is no good, the pump needs a free high volume fuel flow to its input side.

Yes pump needs to be low down, give that a try first, wont cost owt and shouldnt take long.

i have run the metro turbo pump at the top of the front wing with no problems. i also use the standard mini outlet pipe from the tank with no problem.

if this is a non turbo tank then there could be a fuel filter in the tank, on the mini this is too small and blocks after a few hundred yards the engine dies, stop for a bit and you can carry on, the less you leave it the less distance you get.

if it has a filter in the tank like all minis, then it will be the filter.
