right am i thinking in to lock my dizzy as advised at 24degrees for the 998 turbo motor of mine

i take the baseplate out which is attached to the vac advance spring

i lock the bits underneath with weld or solder to stop the dizzy weights moving

blank my vac advance off

& set it to 24degrees with my timing gun so basicly the dizzy is rotated on the dizzy spindle & thats its only function then

tell me if my thoughts on how i'm gonna approach doing it are correct? i have a spare dizzy so i can lock it on the bench & pop it in & set the timing

cheers all, 1st time me messing with a dizzy, i've only fitted an ignitor or points & set the timing before

cheerz again

dave just lock the backplate so the weights do nothing ,then run the vacuum on it for economy .24 degrees is a good sort of 10 psi 8.5 to one ball park ,but tune it before standing on it !

will it advance to maybe double, 40+ degrees if i dont lock the weights, i'll only be using it to get it up & running & a generally set it up so the mixture is "ya-know sorta close" ie in a saffer area for timing!

i'm only looking at maybe 15psi as a absolute maximum, mosly at 8-10 as you say robert!

i'm degreasing & stripping my spare dizzy as we spk, it'l get a lil lube after,

just checking this excellent site inbetween when i make a cuppa *happy*

cheers robert!!! i was close-ish, i cant find much info on dizzys in the few books i have!

yes you need to stop the advance working if you want to time it at 24 .

tom or anyone else with this experiance here's a vid http://www.turbominis.co.uk/_videos/video003.3gp

this is what my thinking tells me you weld up, my nxt thing is i've took my vac advance thing off the side of the dizzy as it got damp! is above the boiler now!

do i need it still & will it really help fuel economy in this application? my understanding is increasing very slowly lol :)

much love frm terry tibbs *tongue*

frm my understanding its the weights springs are a centrifygal device that sorta-dictates the advance curve by the weight of the springs & lil weight things in the end??????

what i'm effectively doing disabling this by welding it so it only rotates its not doing nowt in its centrifugal fashion, & not affecting things over the rev range yes/no???

i'll just be running a basic timing figure set from the timing light & dizzy body

the vac advance still works due to that just moving the baseplate centre & working as it normally does

tell me if my thoughts are ok, simple terms are best for simpltons like me lol *tongue* cheers all

also found this on a saab forum, i dont know if it can be applied to a mini dizzy for turbo application though as i dont know what the inards of a saab dizzy are like:::

If you want to improve the retard characteristics I have got good results from mods to the standard vacuum unit. I drilled out the stop tab and replaced it with a bot head that I had filled to a cam profile and thus can be adjusted from the outside. Set the base timing to 20deg and the max boost retard to 9 deg - I get quite a nice progressive boost retard curve. It has a bit more advance than the BSD unit at low boost but I have not had any knock with 95 Ron fuel. In the US they run worse fuel and the BSD makes sense but in the UK I reckon my mod gives you just as much for no money. Oh and off boost drivability is much better with the extra advance.

opinions plz chappys, i've put a blob of weld on my dizzy in what i think was the correct place pic below, when looking at the spring in the dizzy sort-of in the top right the weld is below it! its stopped any movement of the bits in the bottom of the dizzy (sorry i dont know what they are called!

hope i have this right :/

Please help me understand this one as I can't seem to get my head around this one.
Is 24 degrees the maximum advance that is suitable for around 10psi boost?
In the above posts there is the suggestion of setting the static advance to 24 degrees, surely this is not right.
If the above is true what is wrong with having 24 degrees of centrifugal advance to give a good idle setting rather than welding the distributor and having 24 degrees advance (static)?
It's quite easy to modify any distributor to give whatever centrifugal advance you need

Dave

i think its the cheap & chearful option to weld it rather than pay out to change the bob-weights etc etc, i'll only be using it to get my motor running safely then i'll be popping megajolt in/on

to my understanding which is pretty "basic" to say the least

its better to have the timing retarded to a "safe-ish" level across the rev/load range so the fuel/air ignites before "knock" can develop

ie: because the fuel & air is more in each cylinder on a turbo motor the piston is compressing more fuel/air which gets hotter the more its compressed by the piston, which can cause pre-ignition of the mixture if the timing is too advanced, then the spark frm the plug comes after, pre-can be a hotter ignition frm my understanding too! which cause's piston damage, as i say i only know limitedbasicis on this & i'm happy to learn more about it! be corrected etc etc if explaing stuff to me keep explainations in the basic fashion, get as techy as you like but explain it in a basic manner & i get the idea/understanding pretty fast lol *happy*

i still have a working vac advance but this i'm not sure if i will or should us it! does'nt it just double your timing figure wherever its set, obviously for me its a static for instance -24 so with vac advance it'll be +24

i think jon f had a sexy dizzy that was a bit special for his turbo motor

CMFlip, It's not a question of changing the bob weights. It's about limiting the total advance to 24 degrees I assume.
This can be done easily without welding up and making the distributor useless for any other application.

Dave

yeah i understand if being careful ppl do put a lil blob of weld or solder in the right spot on the backplate (the bit i've welded completely) to limit the total advance which maybe!!!! *tongue* i should have looked into more closely but i'm only doing it as a tempary get it up and running safely measure really, i'm presuming its part of the backplate to stop it moving aprt so far, but i thought that may effect the way the bob weights worked so locked mine up!

i defo appreciate anyone giving other methods to get over the prob, helps more than me at the end of the day *happy*

its a learning proccess for me i tell ya lol 1st ever engine build too! now i'm gonna do the gearbox & carb, can only do it with help of turbominis/vizard/haynes & 1or two others

Can someone please put me out of my misery and tell me:
Do you set the distributor to 24 degrees static advance after welding up or do you ssset it to the normal 6/8/10 static advance after welding up.

I'm using a Megajolt for my engine, but I believe others have indeed welded the centrifugal advance plate to the backplate and then set the timing to 25 deg.

Would this be a good idea on an 1115 turbo as well? I won't be paying Swifty £100 if this works in a good old "Mark Haswell way".
