hi chaps, well i've started my 998 turbo engine build this evening!

cleaned the block "again" & my components &................

i have fitted my crank & main caps so far, all with the help of my trusty haynes manual & tips from you chaps in my head!

had a an issue with my centre main strap, the grooves were'nt deep enough & caused the crank to bind on the thrusts a lil-bit, i filed the grooves & cleaned the strap again, fitted it & with all the caps torqued to 63lbs the crank is running super smooth & i cant identify any tightness or play whilst turning it so i'm a happy chap so far, i'm just gonna chk the end flloat now!

i forgot to tell ya's "i think" i put a light beveled edge on all edges of the inside block too in the same fashion as the vauxhall xe turbo chaps do with their blocks

i have pics & i'll pop them up too later on

nerve-racking stuff for a novice but slow n steady is my saying for this! confidence is still high pheeeeeeeeeeeew!

:)

cheers peeps, all's going swimmingly untill now!

got to the poont of putting my belt drive on & i've forgot to nip to minispares for new seals for it have'nt i, what an "arse"

cam & followers have been soaked in cam lube too,

the gasket under the engine plate was a really good fit unlike some gaskets i've changed before! just gonna have a look at the fit of the oil pump gasket & come in for well earn foon n a bath

i'm not a logical thinker at all, logic games i have no time for but this is like technics lego aint it, wish i bit the bullit years ago to build my own motor!

if this engine runs i'll be pretty chuffed to say the least, i feel its going to smooth! lets hope it stays that way, my short block is nearly there within 4 hours! once the short engine is in one piece i'll go over it before adding other bits

i feel some magners will be bought by me 2moz *happy*

woop woop! *tongue*

hopefully i'll run mine up nxt week if i get these seals for my belt drive, & dont get to confused doing the "timing" dreading that bit a lil but perserverance is key i spose

i'm gonna do my first startup on my dads van as it has no front end, so i'll just put fuel in a container & hook up a temopry rad!, fingers are crossed!

good luck to you too pal! hope alls going smooth for you too!

oil pressure gauge at the ready......arrrrhhhh cackin it

lol smooth certainly aint the word for it - found out the reason it wouldnt turn over today - the engine mount bolts fouled the flywheel - so hopefully i can finish the rest of the wiring in for next week and press go without more cockups lol. just be careful with a temp rad to not run it too long mate - air in system and all that.

Nice one man,

My main piece of advice is to make sure the engine is fully up to temperature before you drive it or at least before you put your foot down...

also let the engine idle for a minute or to after stopping as the turbo can spin on.*smiley*

Cheers

cheers brocky! yep i'm mulling over the idea of a turbo timer, i had a toyota glanza turbo (same as the starlet) & it was a worthwhile mod on that, should be able to fit one to a mini with a relay i'd have thought, if not i'll defo let it cool slow by keeping it running

i'll be to nervous to floor it for a while i reckon, i'll defo take it easy for a while
