oh the amount of degrees (of the imainary circle) the dizzy cam/shaft turns untill the points shut! so if running points its a better way of obtaining the correct gap

am i in the right ballpark sorta thing

it really makes the points gap in the haynes just a guide, was'nt it the norm years back to file the points surface if it was pitted then re-gap the points, dwell angle seems the more accurate way to sort out points trobles if ya use them, small gap hotter spark etc not nesscerrily good but ya probobly know how i'm thinking about it all

defo with you n roger bat ... Every day is a school day! we need more playtime though lol *tongue*

Sold the turbo and seeing what the C20XE can do!

Near Lincoln

gap's different to dwell.

the gap wants to be set correct otherwise it will effect dwell.

but yeah, you carfeully file the points to get rid of the pitting (usually as a pair to keep them true) and refit.

saying that, on a mini its pointless (get it?!*happy*) as they are so cheap. just bin them and get a new set although it is a good check if a car hasnt been run for a while. usually find that they have crusted over.

i'm on my last 2 sets of points & dont plan to use them again really *happy* there ok i spose but reading up on the points dwell subject its amazing how it can make quite a dirrent driving experiance, how if affects the engine performance, more critical than alot of ppl think i reckon

i'll be welcoming megajolt i think, pays to know stuff even if you dont use points, helps diagnosing probs dont it! i have a few lol *happy*

It was easier finding faults with points, condensor & coils many moons ago. Damn nightmare nowadays with ECU's etc. Bring back cars with bad emissions is what I say! Must be my age!

dwell is just a measure of time really....

but as far as points go...fit electronic ignition !!!

Sod all that carry on lol And are you sure about filing points ? whilst its been many years, I thought most had a coating, that if you filed it off...in a very short period of time the points were scrap ?

Do the points fire the coil, or do they fire an external ignition amp of some sort ?

At least that style would mean less current going through the points.
