Right since it seems quite a common question, I thought it'd be an idea to compile some links to ID and engine number.
BTW I take no credit for these, as they were the result of the forums search function :)

BMC, MG and Morris engine codes

Standard engine type codes (from Manchester Minis)

Metro engine numbers
