Hi just reassembling my turbo engine after its rebuild (never been fitted) on my old mni engine there was a take-off from the water pump going directly up into the head, why is this? and do I need to do anything about it?

Thanks,

Kav

That would be for your bypass hose.

You dont need it no, but with the pump and the head you are using, sounds like you need 1.

Get a heavy duty kevlar one as fluted ones can split easy

Sorry im explaining wrong, I have a complete metro turbo engine with no bypass hose on the head or the pump, but my old engine had one on both, I assume this was just some differance in the cooling system?

Hi,
The Metro didn't have one as it's a completely different cooling system.
I've done away with the one I had on my Mini, so no you don't need one.
Cheers,
Gavin :)

kav, as bat says but...... if your fitting a water pump to do away with the bypass hose

i would recommend drilling the outer of the "thermostat" with 6/ 5mm holes, this then substitutes the bypass hose and allows at lease some flow through the head befor the stat opens *wink*

ah rite, how come the metty turbo didnt have this as standard? was there some reason, or is it just considered a better system on the later cars?

they learned a little,

as Benross said, you do still need flow through the engine untill the thermostat opens. this can be done in 3 ways

1 drill the thermostat (or fit the thermostat blanking thing and have a car that never gets worm in cold weather)
2 connect the heater tap as per a mini (drill the hole in the head) and always have the tap open
3 use the metro thermostat sandwitch plate for the heater take off and again keep flow at all times

you could even refit the original bypass hose but whats the point when these are much simpler.

i personaly drilled the head for the heater tap and fitted a take off without a tap.

option no 3 sounds the easiest but My mini sandwich plate has a heater take-off as well, is there a differance?

Thanks for the replies btw
