Its starts but strange noise!!

Hi Guys,

I started my engine today, and it runs but it has a loud knocking noise no matter how I adjust the ignition.

I've got a 123 dizzy and ive tried all the curves and also played around with advancing, retarding it but didnt help.

Its not a turbo but i thought id ask on here anyway

Its got a sw5 cam and I timed it into their spec 108 deg

I thought it may have been the rockers hitting the rocker cover cos i have 1.5 rockers but i have the minispares cover and its not that

the next thing to check was that the valves where'nt hitting the pistons and they werent.

Im pretty sure that its not the ignition or timing but im a bit stumped and short of taking the head off or checking the cam timing which would be a pain in the arse im really stuck

it shouldnt be detonation as the cr is 9.75, if the mixture was wrong would that cause it?

It seems to run well except for the knocking/tapping noise

any ideas would be really helpful

What is oil pressure? Has the bottom end been rebuilt?

oil pressure goes straight up and is fine, yup the bottom end is rebuilt with centre main strap and balanced etc

could be the valve springs bottoming out but they are double valve springs so shuldnt, i will try and check tomorrow

i read that if the mixture is excessively rich then detonation can occur so im gonna check this aswell

noise seems to be coming from around the head but im not sure wot else it could be other than the things i already mentioned

There is no way this is detonation. That only occurs under load. I assume you are just running engine with car stationary?

Check the valve spring caps aren't hitting the guides if it's coming from the head. Can you use 1.5 rockers with an SW5?

well if its not detonation then i guess ill have to check everything else again

u can definately use 1.5 rockers with an sw5 as swiftune sell the kit with cam and rockers

theyre not swftune valve springs so i guess ill check that tomorrow aswell

well i would run with rocker cover off first as i had probs with the back of the rocker screws touching the cover, also can also be the timing cover rubbing against the timing gear if you have fitted dublex timing gear.

try the screw driver to your ear trick that should source it.

only the std pressed type, and the fancy minispares alloy one fit with 1.5 rockers dont they?

im gonna try and run with the rocker cover off this morning, wots the screw driver to your ear trick?

i'd go with the valve springs binding with putting the 1.5's on.

try putting a set of std rockers on and see what happens.

you'll get away without changing the gasket to try it, infact i'd say you'd get away with it full stop but if it does work then i'd whip the head of and change the gasket.

Stick the handle of the screwdriver in a your lug 'ole, then the other end on the engine. Big screwdrivers work best.
You'll be amazed, now move your new super listening device around the engine to find the noise at it's loudest.

although i have heard stories of if something does let go, it shoves the screwdriver through your head...

thats the truth as well! to be fair that was on stuff a bit bigger than a mini engine though.
