The g/f's mini's gearbox has been a crunchy one since she's had it. The plan was to rip it apart after MITP and re-build the bottom end/gearbox etc. She had gone to us the car today and was faced with the following symptoms

-When the engine is running you cannot select any forward gear going from neutral. It won’t go in, just sort of hits a wall. Although you can select reverse but it crunches pretty badly.

-If you start it in gear (with clutch down) you can drive the car and select all the gears, but they are hard to select.
-With the engine off it selects fine

-When in neutral the engine speed does not dip when you depress the clutch

- No dodgy noises while driving

- when you are in gear and the clutch is depressed there is a "little" power getting to the wheels but not so much that the brakes will cause a stall.

Any ideas what I expect to find or maybe something to check before I rip it apart.

Clutch is dragging. Not the gearbox at fault (well, maybe it's worn - but if all you did was replace the gearbox, you'd still have the same problems).

i'd go with that, had that same prob on my old clubby 1100, clutch was'nt disengauging! adjustment & a braided clutch hose sorted mine out the box was fine after, i did change the rod change rubber bobbins too & the engine mounts & stabilisors, do the cheap stuff before ripping the motor out boss

Hi,
Bleed some fluid out into a clean container.
See if it's dark in colour or has little black bits in it.
Check the boot on the master above the pedal and the boot on the end of the slave.
I'm fairly sure it's hydraulic (sp?)
Does it disengage fully if you pump the clutch pedal?
Cheers,
Gavin :)

All sorted... Bled the clutch cylinder and it came back to life.

Gearbox is still crunchy and slightly whiney so it will need doing soon ish. But having just taken the head off to replace that, the bores dont look heathy either, time for a full rebuild me thinks.
